But sometimes it settles down through the chute and ac- cumlates in the silo room or moves into the barn. It will leave yellow stains on silage, wood or other material con­ tacted. Dead birds or mice in the area may indicate silo gas. To minimize the dangers, Young suggests staying out of and away from the silo during the first twelve to sixty hours after filling. However, lethal gas has been detected as early as three hours after filling and up to one year later. Young also recommends the following precautions: -Be alert for bleach-like odors and yellowish-brown fumes in or near the silo. -Run the silage blower for fifteen to twenty minutes before entering the silo. Never enter the silo alone, especially during the danger period. -Ventilate the silo room adequately for at least two weeks after filling silo. -If you experience any silo gas symptoms, see your doctor immediately. Early treatment will prevent lung damage and keep pneumonia from developing later.
