JULY It, 19?< OUT OF REACH-Cardinal shortstop Scott Spengel scrambles to his left in the attempt to snag the hard hit grounder in the game against the Major league Hawks Tuesday night at the VFW field. The Cards won the game as they out-scored the Hawks by a 13-10 score. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Since publication of Hall of Famers in McHenry's baseball youth program, we have been asked if this is a continuing program. Will new names be added? Frankly, we do not have the answers. Maybe the committee can enlighten our readers. The names of the late Charlie Brown and Bart Yegge have been mentioned as candidates. Both spent many years holding the Pony League program together. Other names will probably be tossed in the hopper if further selections are to be made. Those selected so far are deserving of the honor. As this is written, the Democratic convention is running so smoothly you wonder when a blow-up will take place. Until Barbara Jordan's speech held the crowd spellbound, delegates were milling around and being very discourteous with private conversations. Not so when Barbara, first woman, a black woman, held the unattentive ones in the palm of her hand. Sharp interviewers stuck mikes in the faces of several prominent delegates and tried their best to trick them into answering certain questions. When tricks failed, they changed to the prosecuting attorney approach. --EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR This will go to press before we can add our thoughts about the convention. However, if it isn't Carter and Senator Mondale on the ticket, we ought to be half right. They have a good publicity committee at the Ringwood Church. They want more! Don't say you didn't see it here -- or two other places in the Plaindealer. Saturday : Picnic. Supper-at-5 o'clock. Bring your own basket. Entertainment: Visit about "good old days." Our calendar is so full we can't even get out of McHenry County for a few days. Betty Clark told us recently that she waved to us twice and we didn't notice her. We may not wave to men -- but girls -- Think we are going to have to wave at every car that comes along. Maybe we know you. Maybe we don't. The restaurant trail intrigues us. Food is one thing. The world of swimming and swimmers takes care of its own - and then some, claims Marco DiPietro, president of the Midwest Chapter of the National Swimming Pool In- situte. Coppermine looked strong and collected 12 hits and 11 earned runs. I really think Coppermine deserves more credit than their 1-12 record shows. I guess luck just isn't with them. The Coppermine started the game with a 6 run 1st inning. But, then they lost the lead to a 7 run 2nd inning of Fox Hole's. They picked up another run ia- the 3rd but, that was all 'til the 6th when they were losing 11 to 7 and got 4 runs to tie. They then got 1 more run in the 7th to take the lead. But when Fox Hole came to bat in the 7th they scored two runs to win. Too bad. I'll have to say that on Monday, July 12 the next to biggest upset was made when Sunnyside Inn beat Fox Hole 11 to 10. Fox Hole looked like they were going to win easily after the first two innings leading 9 to 4, but all things changed when it came to the 7th inning. The score was now 11 to 9 and Fox Hole was on the short end of the stick. They added 1 more run to make the final score 11-10. Some people say my articles are too short. For them I leave this next paragraph. Tuesday Hettermann's downed Hautzinger 14 to 5 and Old Bridge beat Teko's 21 to 10. CUSTOM-BUILT GARAGES AS LOW AS $2195 FOR 20'x22' OOR R WITH 16 FT. Lauderdale, swimm&rs all across the nation regularly participate in "swim-a-thon" fund raisers to benefit their own clubs, plus other swim ming and charitable acitivites as well. "In a 'swim-a-thon, DiPietro explained, "cash pledges based on a certain sum for each pool length swum by a specific swimmer are solicited by swim club members from friends, relatives and local businesses." A supporter therby enlisted can easily stay within even the tightest budget because at 10 cents per length, for example, no pledge could amount to more than $20 since no one swimmer is allowed to complete more than 200 lengths or swim longer than two hours. "Two hours of swimming is quite An accomplishment," the NSPI official said, "because swimming uses nearly every muscfe in our body. That's one reason why it is such good exercise for kids and adults alike. But it is also the reason why the swimmers are nearly exhausted after a good 'swim- a-thon." 1 Chapel Hill Golf P.A.R. However, Betty Gende and Pool operators, coaches and the swimmers themselves are, enthusiastic about the 'swim-a- thon' program because the program not only establishes a goal for the individual swim mers, but benefits others as well. Money raised is divided with 70 percent going to the spon soring swim club and five ^ percent each to the club's favorite charity and to the International Travel Fund for America's swimmers, com peting overseas. The balance goes.^io help support the operation of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, the sponsoring organization. The record of clubs which have noted additional money to help support retarded, han dicapped and underpriviledged children's swimming program is also impressive. More than 2,000 swim-a-thons have been held since its inception in 1970. Additional information concerning the operation of the' 'swim-a-thon' program is available from the In ternational Swimming Hall of Fame, 1 Hall of Fame Dr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. 33316. She is doing very well and appreciates hearing from all her friends. We all wish her a speedy and happy recovery.
