Clowns Brighten Their Day A special moment of an every day chore. It's not often that this boy awakens from a nap and finds a clown (Ed Guettler) helping him fasten his brace to his leg. The : < A SECTION 2 - PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11,1976 To be a child again and have a group of clowns waken you and assist you on horse and boat rides, must be a thrill. This is especially true if you are handicapped and a summer resident of the Chicago Club for Crippled Children on the Fox river in Riverdale subdivision. For the second time this year, and twice a year for the pasttwenty years, the Kiwanis club of McHenry has been donating time to give these youngsters an unforgettable experience in an otherwise drab life. The Kiwanians, with the help of clowns from northern Illinois, (a few were club members) invade the camp and awakened the youngsers from their afternoon nap. It was all smiles as clowns and club members assisted them with their leg braces in preparation for an afternoon of rides on both horses and boats. The afternoon was highlighted with a clown show and treats, and a cake arrived for dessert. The camp has been in existence for over thirty years and is sponsored by women's clubs of Chicago. Eighty boys and girls, ages 4 to 11, spend eight weeks at the camp in two four-week periods. . 4 They are referred by various handicapped schools in and around Chciago. Besides room and board, the children receive physical and speech therapy, participate in recreational programs, swim in the pool and fish in the lake. Fred Greenberg, director of the camp, has twelve counselors who work with him and the children. Future plans call for an outdoor camping program for the older children. young lad wears a smile as the unexpected takes place. A pony and cart from Elfwood farms in Liberty ville brighten the faces of the children as they travel around the area in an unforgettable fashion. delighted when she discovered some of the makeup had rubbed off on her hand.
