They clinched first place with a quick and convincing 18-2 victory over McHenry Hospital on the final day of play. After the game at the "team clubhouse" it was a happy group celebrating the teams first finish above third place in league history. However, first place finishes are not exactly new to the Nail as many of these Softball players have gone down state as members of the McHenry Ringwood area (Mary Ann Wegner's home town) before landing on Irish Prairie. The story goes that the Original Shamrocks imported Bob Adams when they needed his skill on the ball diamond. At the invitation of Bill Hauri (Good 01' Bill), we enjoyed the McCullom Lake Sportsman's Club picnic Sunday on the club grounds near Hebron. The picnic grounds are ideal. Chicken delicious. The award winners will appear in the Opening Day parade August 13 and will receive their awards in a ceremony at the grandstand at 8 p.m. County Farm Bureau Softball team winning the state championship 2 out of the last 3 years. Rusty Nail moved into first place just before the All-Star break. In a doubleheader following the All-Star game the Nail spit with second place House of David but that one victory was the margin bet ween first and second place. The Nail never relinquished first place the rest of the way, winning most games whenever they had to. Members of the first place Rusty Nail include: Len Ackerman, Charlie Brown, Bill Comstock, A1 Elliott, Jim Gray, Bill Huff, Gred Johnson, Larry Jones, Jim Lay, John Michels, Gary Miller, Rich Mueller, Dennis Schmitt, Gary Schmitt, Leon Schmitt, Charley Sowers, Dave Sundby, Mike Thennes and Randy Thiel. Oh - I almost forgot the skipper - Kevin Bauer! House of David took second place, their lowest finish since joining the league. The House beat every team in the league at least twice this year but they failed to sweep the 3 game series versus lower finishing ball teams. Had they won the games "they were suppose to" it could have been House of David on top. Second place was not clinched until a come from behind rally erased whatever hope the Cork and Cleaver had in winning. Last Wednesday the Cork jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first inning, needing a win to make the playoffs. The Cork still held an 8-3 lead after 3 innings but then the House of David bats went to work. The House outscored Cork and Cleaver 21-2 in the final innings to insure a second place finish, as Old Bridge with their win could have moved into that position. For Cork and Cleaver it had seemed for a few brief innings that they had a victory in (Jtaeir pocket and a playoff positon « cinched. They led.by scores of £ 6-1, then 7-1 and after three inning, 8-3. The Cork hitters suddenly fell silent and with that their playoff hopes were erased. Ending in a tie with Ti> Chalet meant The Chalet would earn the right to play the first place Rusty Nail in the playoffs. The Chalet had won three straight over the season versus Cork and Cleaver to earn that right. During the above game The Chalet was in the process of coming from behind to beat Fireside Inn 9-4. The Chalet had to win to have a chance at the playoffs and their usual stingy defense along with a 3 run rallv in the sixth and 4 more in surance runs in the seventh put them into fourth place and the playoffs. Old Bridge breezed to a 23-4 victory over Robino Ladd. Old Bridge finished third this year, but when we look back earlier in the season the Bridge was 0-4 sitting in last place. Batting champ Don Prazak helped things out with a hefty .699 batting average, with 5 hits, 50 RBI's and 11 homeruns. (There was a 'minor' error in last week's column - Don had 68 at bats not 78!). The Bridge won 14 of their last 17 games which is an achievement in itself with the competition level in the league this year. Now, the playoffs begin with two games already played this Monday and two more set for this Wendesday. The first place Rusty Nail meets The Chalet while House of Daivd plays Old Bridge in the two semifinals. Both are best 2 out of 3 mat chups with single games of 7 lUNDER NEW MANAGEMENT! August 16.'If either or both semifinals go a third game the finals would then start on Wednesday, August 18, with the second game on Monday, August 23. If a third game is necessary in the finals, Wed nesday, August 25 would be the date. 'Who will win this year's championship.' is a question four teams think have the answer to - but only one team is going to be correct! Rusty Nail will take into the playoffs the first place banner knowing that not once in league history has a team other than the first place finisher taken the cham pionship. In fact each cham pionship team has never lost a game in the playoffs! House of David makes its second appearance in a row in the playoffs, and since most of the players also were on the old Jake's championship ball club this is actually their third year in a row. The House has never lost a game in playoff' com petition, having won four straight games in last Year's competition, besides four straight as Jake's. This year they again meet Old Bridge, a team that lost two straight to the House in relatively easy fashion during the 1975 finals after having won 2 of 3 during the regular season. The Chalet is in the playoffs for the third time in four years. They finished in first place in 1973 and then took second in 1974 during both regular season and playoff competition. They just made the playoffs this year with a come from behind victory over Fireside Inn. Old Bridge, who last year lost first place on the final day of the regular season to the team they later swept two straight games during the semi finals, could be the first team ever to finish lower than first yet win the playoffs. This year they play the House of David in the playoffs and going out on a limb I will predict the winner of this semi final playoff to eventually win the championship. Looking at the records during the regular season Rusty Nail swept 3 games from The Chalet while House of David took 2 of 3 from? Old Bridge. House of David also beat Rusty Nail 2 of 3 and from Old Bridge. Old Bridge has taken 3 straight from The Chalet but lost 2 out of 3 to Rusty Nail. On this record alone both Rusty Nail and the House of David have 6 wins and 3 losses versus the other tournament teams; Old Bridge has 5 wins, 4 losses; while the "little David", The Chalet, has only 1 victory and 8 losses. If you are not doing anything on Monday or Wednesday evenings from 6:30 until about 8:00 then come on over to West Campus High School to view the 1976 playoff competition. This week and next week vyill provide 12-inch fans, or baseball fans in general, an exciting evening of Softball. Pat Wirtz : J0HNSBURG • • BOYS LEAGUE ! McHenry County Farm Bureau Qualifies Three Teams For State Finals Led by the defending state champion Slow Pitch team, McHenry County Farm Bureau managed to qualify three teams for the state finals in district competition this week. Winning at DeKalb were the Slow Pitch team and Boys' 4-H team. The Slow Pitch 35-ers did not need to qualify, a small number of teams from northern Illinois making further elimination before the state finals August 24-25 un necessary. Manager Gary Miller's Slow Pitch team, a member of the state finals six of the past seven years, proved to be heavy hitters. They won both games early because of the 10-run rule. They beat Kane county, 13-2, and then downed Ogle, 7-6. The Boy's 4-H club entry was built around the Community Builders club in Harvard. This team won second at the state last year, and it began the quest for state honors this year with a win over Winnebago county. Then it downed Cook county to advance to Springfield. John Hardt is team manager. The All-County team lost to a strong DeKalb team in one of the day's tightest games. McHenry had a 6-4 lead going into the last of the seventh but a rain of hits ended dreams of a trip to the state finals for the McHenry team. The Girls 4-H team rallied to MENS 16" SOFTBALL Energy Use More efficient use of energy to heat and cool homes and office buildings, plus other conser vation measures, can perhaps make the greatest single con tribution to solving the nation's energy problems. Teko's were hitting good and scoring runs and when Sunnyside Inn came to bat in the bottom of the 7th they were losing 10 to 7. But they'put together enough runs to tie, and then one more to win. The big hitters for Teko's were Mike I Sears • Legood, who was 3 for 4 with two doubles, and Jim Barth who had one double and one triple. Don Prazak of Sunnyside Inn was 3 for 4 with a triple. The loses also lowered them to 3rd place in the standings. The first loss on Monday was to the Fox Hole. Some people were saying that it was the first time Old Bridge has lost by the 15 run rule since the rule was put into effect. The Fox Hole was doing alot of solid hitting and Old Bridge wasn't. Everybody on the Fox Hole got at least 2 hits a piece. The second loss on Tuesday was to Sunnyside Inn. Sunnyside Inn to tally handled Old Bridge 18 to 7. win Its first game. BeMlTCTa run, McHenry made two outs in the final inning against Lake and seemed destined to lose. But Marge Frey singled, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball! Kelly Cook singled, and stole the next two bases while Donna Morris was at bat. Donna singled to score Kelly with the winning run, 7-6. But McHenry had to play immediately against Whiteside county and lost in finals. In a big surprise, the McHenry Young Adult team bowed to Whiteside county, 9-2. Ogle got a four-run first-inning lead. The McHenry 35-ers and Girls' Open Class both for feited. So come on out and see the 8 teams decide who's going into the playoff. First game at 7:30, second 8:30.
