Albert, superintendent of the Special Education District of McHenry County, announced the recent appointment of Stephen B. Tower as director of Tran sportation for the Special Education district. Tower served in the United States Air Force and is a graduate of the Amarillo Air F o r c e M a i n t e n a n c e Technicians' school as an engine specialist. Following his discharge from service, he worked for several years as an automobile mechanic for a large General Motors dealership in South Cook county. During this period of time, he completed the specialty training school for auto mechanics. Most recently Tower has been working as a semi-truck driver, mechanic and dispatcher for a large motor ̂ freight and cartage company. He also operated his own auto repair service. Tower and his wife, Mary, are the parents of two children, Stephen and Tammie. They currently reside in Beverly Shores, In., but will move to McHenry county. As director of Transportation for the Special Education District of McHenry County, Tower will be responsible for the scheduling and routing of all SEDOM buses and will have a major responsibility in supervising and directing preventive and corrective maintenance. In announcing the appointment, Dr. Albert said, "We are pleased to have Mr. Tower join our staff. I am certain this will enable us to maintain a tighter control over rising costs of maintenance and operation and a more effective scheduling of our tran sportation system." HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS Better Crops Bring PCA Improved Credit Quality Improved credit quality caused by better crops for farmers and a stronger supervisory staff by the organization was reported to 300 farmers and their wives attending the annual meeting of the Northeast Illinois Production Credit association at Harvard last week. Alan Ainger, chairman, who was honored during the meeting for twenty years of service as a board member, pointed out the improvement in the quality of loans and re payments during his report to the membership. Ainger said eighty-five loans were made to hew members during the past year. Ainger said the PCA had $9,999,089 in loans outstanding at the end of the calendar year, and by June 30, this had grown to more than $12 million. The number of loans outstanding on June 30 stood at 404. Gene Slack, president, revealed the Northeast Illinois PCA is the first in the state in terms of obtaining new business. It also has a larger percentage of agricultural r loans in its area than do other PCA's in their assigned territory. "We are reaching out to farmers. We have an active staff seeking to serve farmers with intermediate and short- term loans for operating ex penses, cattle purchases, and machinery requirements," explained Slack. "This is the second year our business to farmers has grown, and I think we will continue to get more farm business even though we are in an area of urbanization. Our 8M> percent interest rate is an attractive feature, too, made possible through the farm credit system financed primarily by farmers themselves." Slack said the Northeast Illinois PCA continues to make loans to mink farmers, with about a million dollars loaned in that specialized type far ming. Smiles Slack, "We're the only PCA in the state with this type loan business." Four staff members were honored for years of service. Vera Johansen, vice-president, was saluted for forty-two years of service. Veleta Harting, assistant treasurer, was recognized for twenty years of service. Terry Schwebke, assistant vice-president in the Lake county office, was honored for eight years of service. Tom Jones, assistant vice-president in the Boone county office at Belvidere, was recognized for five years of service. Slack presented service pins to two directors-to Alan Ainger, Harvard, for 20 years of service, and to Marvin Kruckenberg, Mundelein, for five years of service. In the election, Ainger was re-elected to the board for a two-year term. Ainger, 57, and his wife, Gladys, own a 142-acre farm. With their sons, George and David, they operate 700 acres. The Aingers have a 125-cow dairy herd. Alan has been on the board twenty years and has been chairman for fifteen years. He is also president of the Sixth Farm Credit District Advisory committee. In this capacity he represents five northern Illinois associations to the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank in St. Louis. Members elected the following to the nominating committee for the 1977 annual meeting: William J. Becker, David H. Perkinsand, Robert J. Mathison, with Floyd E. Seeman, Ralph Lacy and Fred J. Stikle as alternates, respectively. Clarence Aavang, Huntley, was chairman of the 1976 nominating committee and Robert Nichols was named chairman of the tellers. In his summary to the membership, Slack said of mid- September loans outstanding have risen to an added million dollars since June 30, to more than $13 million. During the fiscal year ending June 30, net worth increased a half million dollars for the year, totaling $2,069,144 on that date. ASHY FORM...With football season returning to the national spotlight, cooler weather invades much of the nation. At Miami Beach, however, surf-side fun is a year-round activity and pretty girls like Karen Perkins make the most of it. Faulty Seals When home-canned foods spoil, the most common reason is faulty or improper seals. Some times the jars themselves are the problem. Air bubbles in the food may prevent a good seal, too. That's why it's important to "knife out" air bubbles before sealing jars. A/ Building Trades House. Bids will be accepted until 10:00 a.m. C.D.S.T. Monday, October 4. 1976.
