Terry needed par on this hole to capture the crown. He did ii as his putt found the cup and Terry captured the club championship with a round of 74 to give a 36 hole total of 150. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) T. Oeffling Wins Chapel Hill Title By Dick Rabbitt Terry Oeffling a newcomer to the ranks of Chapel Hill Golf Club, won the Class A title with a twenty-one foot pressure putt on the last hole to nose out Harold Kivley, Bobby Beyers, and Norm Strossner. With Beyers and Strossner sitting in the clubhouse as leaders, Oeffling and Kively approached the 18th hole. Knowing he had to have a par three to win, Oeffling hooked h& drive to the left about 30 yards from the green. Taking a seven iron he managed to get over the bunker and just on the gfeen. Kively's drive was a few inches short of the green, and when Harold sank his thirty- three foot chip, the pressure was really on Oeffling. He then proceeded to do what a champ will do, and that is sink the pressure putt. Oeffling shot a 76-74 for a 50 total, Kivley, Beyers, and Strossner all carded 151. In the playoff for the second place trophy, Strossner won on the second hole when he shot a par 4 to Kivley's and Beyers 5. In his final round Oeffling had two out of bounds and a three putt green, plus a few birdies along the way. In Class B Bob Nielsen with a 157 nosed out Eddie Todd who came in with a 159. Class C winner was Ray Holm with a 174 edging Bud Houda who shot a 175. It was a great tournament, and Club "Pro" John Bolton did a fine job of conducting the two week tourney. » Marian Central Cross- Country Team Looks Good In Invitational In weekend Cross Country action the Marian Central Hurricanes turned in some fine team and individual per formances in the 13 team Wauconda Invitational. In the old days, the farmers used to bank their houses with straw, corn stalks or something when the first frost arrived. Here Come De Judge! The Roland Herrmanns attended a golf outing and political dinner in Antioch and - - says Roland, "Lo and behold I met another Walsh." 'Twas cousin Irving. Can only presume it was a Democratic event. SUDDEN THOUGHT: Looking at pictures of an tique cars and some later models brings to mind that cars were equipped with cutouts. When you drove through the great open spaces you opened it up and let 'er roar. The noise was too much. Everybody thought the baseball races were over a few weeks back. Except for the powerful Reds of Cincinnati, there has been plenty of breathing down the leaders' necks. The Cubs and Sox are having something to say about who wins -- each in their own way. Of for the day when the Cubs and Sox will meet in a World Series! By John Busscher In the second round of the Past-Presidents Tournament played at the club on Sunday, Sept. 19, in Flight 1 Don Hojnacki defeated Bud Gierke, Kurt Knaack beat Jim Packee, Ted Spengel defeated Mo Domoto and Art Jackson beat Ray Spiess. Fight 2 winners were Irv Laures over Kurt Waberzeck, Jack Smith defeating Ralph Smith, Mike Ahern over Ed Schuler and Franz Koehler beating Dick Turner. Mel Prust defeated Doc Carelli, Paul Fidler beat Ed Ray, Tom Burke was unable to play his match with Ray Rode because of illness, so had to forfeit, and Ken Holmes beat John Nolan. We wish Tom a speedy recovery and hope he will be up and around soon. The husband-wife outing was rained out after four or five holes had been played but the members did enjoy cocktails and a fine dinner. Every Morning One thing about the speed of light--it gets here too early in the morning. -Tribune, Chicago. Warriors At Bronco Camp Saturday McHenry Country Club Talk about penalties. We took the day off Tuesday to take one of those pleasurable rides into Wisconsin with the Winkels. Sp -- we now pay the penalty of trying to put a sports section together in limited time. The off day was worth it all. Weather was comfortable. Traffic was light (you have to come to McHenry to see traffic). The trees haven't taken on that beautiful fall coloring, but there will be another day. On fishing trips, they always say, "You should have been here last week." To see the beautiful trees they say, "you came two weeks too early." Our foursome stopped to see Bill DeVries, but heard he had gone home in a weakened condition. It seems Bill is getting a party together for a trip to the races and has been dieting too strenuously in an effort to make the weight to ride his famous horse "Riverside Drive". He and Eddie Bimbo own the great horse, but Eddie can't stay in the saddle. According to the calendar summer has ended and winter won't arrive before Dec. 21. Cuda Golfers Defeat Zion And Woodstock By Dick Rabbitt Coach Chuck Cuda's McHenry High golf team continued on the winning path by defeating Zion Monday at Zion and Woodstock Tuesday at Crystal Woods. In the Zion match Bob Lunkenheimer had a 36, Jim Buenzli a 39, and Tom Pepping and Tim Byers each carded a 40. Steve Kivley led the locals against Woodstock with a 38,' Buenzli had a 40, along with Tom Pepping and Bob Lunkenheimer had a 42. The locals shot a 155 against Zion and a 160 against Woodstock. The sophs defeated Zion 162 to 178 with Kivley shooting a 38, and Bill Lange a 40. Against Woodstock Lange, a promising freshmen, shot a 1 under par 35 on a windy day to lead the sophs to a 162 to 195 win. SUDDEN DEATH-and Norm Strossner needed this pitch-on at the first hole of the runner-up playoff in the Chapel Hill club Championship. Norm placed his shot a foot from the pin and his one putt kept him lied with Harold Kively and Bob Beyer. Norm went on to capture the runner-up title when he collected a par on the next hole as Kively and Beyer carded Bogies. This is Strossner third runner-up title at the Chapel Hill Golf club. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) By Dick Rabbitt Tomorrow Saturday af ternoon Coach Bill Day will take his McHenry High Warriors to Barrington to engage the Broncos. This could probably be the last game between the two schools as Barrington is moving to the Mid-Suburban Conference next season. The Warriors haven't defeated the Broncos since 1964 when they won 19 to 6. Coach Bill Graham has 10 lettermen returning, all seniors and 8 were regulars last season. Leading the Bronco attack is Bryan Amis last years scoring leader with 25 touch downs. Amis scored 28 points in last weeks 48 to 22 win over Lake Forest. Junior Bruce Henricksen the quarterback has looked ex ceptionally good in his first two games according to Graham. In talking to Coach Graham, he says "there is really no emotion for us in regards to leaving the conference this year", he went on to say that there are several good teams in the conference, and it should be a battle down to the wire. The Broncos are not really big, but are quick, and they not only rely on their speed in the offensive team, but on the quickness of their defense. The Warriors will be the underdog. Their performance the past two weeks, has not been that outstanding. Mistakes have been very costly. Coach Bill Day feels that if his Warriors play to their potential, they can stop the Broncos. In talking with the coach he commented, "In the Maine North game, our kids didn't carry out their assign ments, and we got burned on their first three offensive plays". Coach Day also added, "we have to cut down on our foolish penalties when we get a ' scoring drive going", and all Warrior fans will attest to that statement. Kickoff is at 2:00 p.m. at the Bronco field, hope to see all of you fans at the game. The crystal ball was perfect last week, hitting five out of five. This week I'll pick the Broncos over the Warriors (however, if the Warrior play the type of ball they are capable of playing a upset could be in the making). The Tigers should rebound from the Liberty ville loss and take North Chicago. Mundelein's defense should be able to stop Crown. Libertyville stepping out of the conference should defeat Wheeling, and in the upset of the week, Lake Forest to defeat the defending Champs ZeeBees. The Scouts gained almost 400 yards last week against Barrington. CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS found the temperture on the cool side as they ran the three miles course during the McHenry- Buffalo Grove meet Tuesday at West Campus. It was even cooler as they passed the water sprinkler near the start of the race. Harriers Lose To Buffalo Grove The "Running Warriors" of Coach Bill Hutchinson took it on the chin Tuesday at West Campus when they lost to Buffalo Grove 26 to 29. Mike Burman was the winner for the locals in the time of 15:56 on a cold windy day. The sophomores fared better as they won 18 to 45, with Smith the winner in the time of 17:56.
