I PAGE 7 - FLAINDKALfciK-h KtLJA * , Ut lUBtK 1, iy?fo On The Sidelines by Dick RabMtt The "Fighting Warriors" were a vastly improved ball club last Saturday at Barrington. Although they could not put the ball in the end zone, they however displayed a good brand of football. They were able to move the ball at times against the Bronco defense, and one of these days they are going to put it all together and North Suburban foes beware. Little Steve Mai had an outstanding day on defense for the Warriors. All the lad did was to be a part of twenty-one tackles all over the field, and intercepted three Bronco passes. Too many Prep Highlights spot the offense, it's about time some credit is given to defensive players. Hats off to Steve for a job well done. Football games can't be played without a little humor. During the game Saturday a player lost a chin strap. Coach Day was yelling for a chin strap to give the player. At first he could get no response from the sidelines. As if a signal was given, all at once the poor coach had to duck, as chin straps came flying his way from the reserves on the bench. In the moment of combat, the coach probably didn't catch the humor of it all, but it did seem funny to us in the stands. Our sour grape award this week goes to Coach Jim Anderson of St. Francis of Wheaton. After the Marian Hurricanes of Tom Parker defeated St. Francis 22 to 10 last Saturday, Anderson walked over to Parker to congratulate him on his teams' victory, and then commented "you won't win the conference with that team". The St. Francis coach may be right in his prediction, but you don't tell a coach of a team who has just defeated you that he can't win the conference. That type of talk and attitude has no place in high school athletics. People interested in the McHenry High Wrestling Club should be at the Upper Gym in West Campus on Tuesday. Evidence of insurance coverage is required. This is the third season of the Club and everyone is invited to join this fine group. A tip of the fedora to Coach Chuck Cuda and his McHenry High golf team. They won the Crown Invitational neld at Randall Oaks Golf Club last Saturday beating out nineteen other teams. Tim Byers won the playoff for second place. Next week they enter the Lake Forest Invitational to be • held at Lake Bluff. Again it will be a twenty team event, with some of the top schools in this part of the state entered in the event. Coaches Pam Schaeffer and Lou Whittaker are a happy pair these days. The girls swimming team of McHenry High won their first match in the history of the school when they defeated Crown 88 to 81. It took a long seven years for the girls to notch their first win and the spirit is really high with the gals these days. Let's hope they can keep up the good work. The Rockford Booster Club failed to raise $250,000 needed to continue the athletic program and extra curricular program this past week. The deadline was noon Monday, and now the school board will try again to pass a referendum to finance school activities. The outlook is dim in Rockford, and it looks as if the athletic seasons for the five high schools is all but finished for this school year. Had some response for my plea for firewood for the homecoming bonfire to be held at West Campus on Thursday, Oct. 14th. If you have any wood you would like to dispose of, please contact me at West Campus. We will be glad to take it off your hands and put it to good use. They drive longer distances, make several stop and go trips to town, and often times, neglect important ser vice checkups. They do remember oil changes and tune ups, but what about wheel bearings? The smart motorist has his wheel bearings packed at least every year with grease. The grease cuts down friction and allows the Wheel to turn freely on the axle. If this pro cedure is postponed for any great length of time, a "humming" sound can be detected around the wheel. This will eventually lead to front-end prob lems and a worn axle. Think ahead! Good service doesn't end with an oil change, it covers everything important to your life and the life of your car. Brought to you by Jim Janicek SALES TORKELSON LINCOLN-MERCURY 4611 w. The course went north to the mouth of the river and returned to the city beach about 9 miles. Trophies were awarded to 1st. 2nd and 3rd places in 13 different classes. The turnout was very good. There were people from the Chicago area, Aurora, Pontiac, Sterling, and as far as Wisconsin and Iowa. Needless to say the rain kept some canoers away. The Jaycees are planning to make this a annual event. Proper Creaming Proper creaming is a must to give those cakes a soft, relvety texture. Make sure the fat is at room temperature With'an elec tric mixer, cream the fat on low speed, add sugar and beat on medium speed until the sugar dissolves and the creamed mix ture is light and fluffy.
