J PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 6, 1174 I Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc tober 7, 1926) A canvass of the business men of McHenry following the big Dollar Day put on by them on Thursday, Oct. 2, showed that the Plaindealer's prediction that this would be "McHenry's Biggest Trading Day" was correct. Thousands of dollars were deposited in the cash registers of the local business places as a result of the combined efforts and ex ceptional bargains listed by the merchants. The members of the James B. Perry Fortress No. 12 Daughters of the G.A.R. met at the M.W.A. hall, West McHenry, on Wednesday af ternoon, Oct. 1. Mrs. Ruby M. Drury, senior commander-in- chief of the National Daughters of Waukegan, was present to assist in the work. Two new members were accepted, Mrs. Jennie Eddy and Mrs. Mae Spencer, which completes the number of members necessary for the charter. Next Sunday the Methodist Sunday school will observe .{jUdly day and Promotion day, tamd jt is hoped that all of the ; members of the school will be •present to receive their ^ffomotion cards and get Acquainted with their new ^teachers. We also hope for a good attendance to welcome the new pastor. Because of the several days of rain, the work on the new road west of town which is a part of Route 20, has progressed rather slowly during the past week. The cement mixer is located at Sherman's Hill and forms are being put in and everything is in readiness to begin pouring cement as soon as the roadbed dries out a little more. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc tober 8, 1936) McHenry County voters will h£ve a wide range of can didates to select from at the election on Nov. 3, especially for the national and state of fices. For the choice of members to the general assembly from the Eighth Senatorial district and to the county office, the electorate will have only the candidates of the two major parties. Twenty-four indictments were returned against seventeen people in the circuit court Tuesday afternoon before Judge Ralph Dady of Waukegan. It was the largest batch of indictments to be returned in open court in McHenry county in quite some time. According to local con tractors the prospects for work during the winter are very good and the summer season has seen increased activity in the building line with many repair jobs as well as new work, in cluding homes, barns and summer cottages furnishing employment for local car penters and their men. Stating that science is light, light is power and power is making use of what God has given us, Harry C. White, philosopher, scientist and lecturer, gave an interesting lecture on "The Wonderful Science" at the high school auditorium Monday afternoon before the students of the high school, junior high school and a few visitors. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 11, 1951) It is a rare individual who can say he is a resident of McHenry and still not be aware that this is homecoming week in the city. Festivities start Thursday and will be climaxed Friday night, Oct. 12, when Lake Geneva's football team invades the home field for a game which is expected to draw several thousands of students and alumni. Again this year a warning has been issued by R.L. Tazewell, county superin tendent of schools, regarding the danger of cars passing school busses when stopped either to receive or discharge children. Mr. Tazewell em phasized the fact that the law is very strict regulating such traffic and must be observed. William Kinsala, a graduate of McHenry Community high school, now attending Wood bury college, Los Angeles, has been awarded the gold pin of the Phi Gamma Kappa honor scholarship fraternity. To attain this honor his grades were of the high scholastic standing required for mem bership in this organization for four quarter's attendance at Woodbury, where he is majoring in executive interior decoration. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc tober 13, 1966) On next Tuesday, Oct. 18, McHenry voters will go to the polls to vote on the question of bond issues that will result in two separate improvements if approved. The $35,000 issue covers „ traffic signal lights. State and federal regulations make it mandatory for the City Council to make changes to meet uniform standards. Changes in traffic lights are made in the interest of safety to both pedestrians and drivers of vehicles. For instance, there can be no confusion for pedestrians since the lights will show "WALK" and "DON'T WALK". The storm drainage question, in the amount of $95,000 which will appear on the ballot is the result of a complete engineering survey. The most urgent requests for help have come from residents along the Front street area where high water conditions in the rainy seasons have caused some Growth Program For Boy Scouts Now In Full Swing The annual growth program within the Blackhawk Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, Inc., is now in full swing.
