(PHOTOCOM PHOTO) HELPING jPAWS- m l Bv Estelle Atwell Pets would be better off if the people who adopt them were screened as closely as the potential pet is. Too many times, unfortunately, people acquire a pet and shortly in compatibility sets in between the animal and the owner. As often as not, this is the fault of the owner, not the animal. Among those who should not consider owning a pet: The young marrieds. Both working, housekeeping in a small apartment. They have no immediate family plans so they decide they'll keep a pet. Housebreaking the pet may never become a success because the owners cannot be consistent in their training. The dog is shut up in one room, paper trained, and left there all alone. Can you imagine what this does to a dog needing companionship -- and all dogs do9 A young trained nurse shut her little poodle up in the bathroom daily. Eventually she had to give the dog away. But by that time the little animal was a nervous wreck with a problem that took great patience on the part of the second owner The neurotic types. They start out with a healthy sound dog but living with a neurotic person rubs off on the dog. They may become touchy, irritable, unpredictable. Can you blame them9 How would you like close contact with someone who is moody, or given to outbursts and unreliable? Because there is no follow-through in training habits and an inconsistent pattern of living, the dog cannot fulfill his role and actually suffers. Families with undisciplined small children or older children. Children with this permissive background can be cruel and lack understanding. Introduce a puppy or older dog in a family like this and the dog becomes a play object, a vic tim, the helpless target of in considerate and cruel treat ment. Organizations like Helping Paws screen owners as care fully as possible as they are ex tremely reluctant to allow animals to be misplaced. Helping Paws maintains an office, open from 10 to noon and 1 to 3, Monday through Friday. The phone number is 459-2641.
