Conduct Duplicate BrldgeGameWeekly Starting Oct. 20, the McHenry County Duplicate Bridge club will conduct a duplicate bridge game every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW club, 240 Throop street, Woodstock. The club is fran- chised by the American Con­ tract Bridge league and will award master points to winners of the games. The bridge club has *been organized by Bob and Kay Korte, Woodstock, both of whom are ACBL certified directors. Korte is a life master and Mrs. Korte very close to becoming one The purpose of the club is to provide a con­ venient playing site for duplicate bridge players in McHenry county as well as to introduce rubber bridge and home duplicate players to the challenge and friendly com­ petition of tournament bridge play < The duplicate games will be conducted as pairs events, and -players are encouraged to bring their favorite partners. Courthouse Squares COMPLACBUCY INCOMPATIBLE FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc­ tober 14, 1926> The Kiwanis beautification contest closed this week. This contest was inaugurated by the McHenry Kiwanis club last spring and the announcement made that three cash prizes would be awarded to those who entered the contest to make McHenry the "City of Flowers". Now the committee has made the report, the winners being Miss Anna M. Stock, first; J.C. Bicklev second; and Richard Stenge third. An unidentified man was found dead in a sweet clover patch alongside the railroad tracks about 80 rods west of Solon Mills, Sunday. His right leg was broken and other bruises on his body indicated that he must have been hit by, or fell off a train. Another boy has joined the membership of the Illinois Children's home situated on Crystal Lake road, making a total of seven boys now under the care of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Kline. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cairns have moved from the Edwin Knox home south of town to the flat in the Frett house in the north end of town. The members of the local court of Foresters recently organized a bowling club which consists of four teams who will bowl at Clark's alleys in West McHenry twice a week. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oc­ tober 15, 1936) Rev. R.W. Pinnell, pastor of the McHenry Methodist church, will return to McHenry for another year, according to the announcement of the ap­ pointments made at the close of the Rock River conference in Austin church, Chicago. More than 500 visiting members of the Royal Neigh­ bors of America were in at­ tendance at the twenty-first annual convention of McHenry county held at the Community high school Friday, Oct. 9. The attendance would no doubt have been still larger if the weather had been more favorable, but rain during the day and a dense fog followed by a hard rain during the evening made driving conditions un­ favorable. "Billy" Pries and Felicie Unti left Sunday on a trip through the East, making the trip with a trailer which Mr. and Mrs. Pries recently pur­ chased. They expect to attend the Ice Cream Manufacturers convention at Atlantic City and will visit Mr. and Mrs. Henry Foss in New York. The damage suit of Mrs. Thomas Walsh of McHenry against George and Math Glosson will be the first case on call in the McHenry County Circuit court Nov. 10. Mrs. Walsh asks damages in the amount of $20,000 for injuries received when she was struck by the Glosson car while crossing the street at the in­ tersection of Green and Elm streets, McHenry, on Oct. 13, 1935. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from thelites of Oc­ tober 18, 195 \y A McHenry resident, John Lang, was the'tragic victim of a highway crash in which several others were injured on Monday morning Oct. 15. The accident occurred near Rand road and Central, Main township, about 7 o'clock in the morning while Mr. Lang was enroute to work. Mrs. Vale Adams has been named chairman of the local Crusade for Freedom cam­ paign. which is the American people's challenge to world Communism. Sixteen million Americans have already responded to the appeal and their support has made possible the World Freedom Bell, erected in Berlin as a per­ manent symbol of free men's determination to resist aggression. Summer is over! Although the calendar made that statement official almost a month ago, warm breezes extended their annual visit into October, to the delight of everyone. The weatherman predicted the change as early as Sunday, but even this didn't dampen the spirits of local residents. It took the actual arrival of a cool north wind late Tuesday evening, followed by clouds and a bit of rain to convince McHenry folks that autumn was really with us to stay. The fighting and spirited Warriors left the MCHS Homecoming crowd wild as they topped Lake Geneva 26-13 last Friday night. Lt Richard Clark and Sgts. Robert Kranz and Ken­ neth Espey were changing shifts at the city hall when an unidentified driver rushed into the station and handed them a piece of paper which contained a license number and the words "hold-up at Clark's station." The Veterans administration is one of the largest employers of handicapped persons with almost 11,000 on its rolls.
