Cite Contribution Of 4-H In Special Week Consumer SECTION 2 - PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER-FR1DAY, OCTOBER 15, ism® The opportunity to develop leadership and com munications potential is one of the finest contributions 4-H provides today's young people, David Plocher, Extension adviser in McHenry county, said last week at a luncheon marking National 4-H week. "The boys and girls learn a great deal from their projects, but I think those who take advantage of the opportunity to talk, demonstrate and par ticipate in public speaking are the biggest beneficiaries of 4- H/' he continued. Attending the luncheon at the Old Courthouse Inn were representatives of the county's 1,170 4-H members and the .county's 200 adult leaders. Also present at the 4-H week kickoff hosted by Cliff Ganschow were Extension advisers in the county and Charles Weingart, president of the McHenry County Fair association. The 4-H members present were Jean Slater, Cary, 4-H queen; Dave Gieseke, Crystal Lake, 4-H king, and Diane Kuhlman, Hebron 4-H Federation president. Adult leaders were represented by two long time leaders, Stuart Wells, thirty-three years, and Mrs. William Davidson, twenty-four years, both from Harvard. Weingart recalled how the McHenry County Fair was revived in 1949 to serve as a setting for 4-H boys and girls to display their projects and see how their efforts compared with others. "I believe 4-H is a cor nerstone of rural America and now its influence is moving into the smaller towns and cities. In McHenry county, more than half the members live in non- rural areas," said Weingart. "Since 1949 when we had about 600 4-H members, many things have changed-fewer dairy animals, more beef en tries, and a big interest in goats. Clothing styles have u n d e r g o n e s e v e r a l changes since 1949. Judging standards for such things as our beef animals have changed considerably, too, to meet public taste for leaner, tender beef." But Weingart said what has not changed is the help given the McHenry County Fair by the many 4-H leaders who work tirelessly with the young men and women. He also said the 4- H members themselves help make the fair a success in addition to their roles as competitors. "They help make the grounds attractive. They maintain a food stand that is popular. They make sure their exhibits are attractive, and their showmanship is to be ad mired." Weingart added that the work and leadership provided by the board of directors of the Fair association is "a vital and much appreciated contribution." He revealed the fair has grown so much the past five years it requires year-around attention to plans and the physical facilities by the board mem bers. Plocher reported about two- thirds of the county's 1,170 4-H members are girls, but on a statewide basis, the million in the United States are about equally divided between boys and girls. McHenry county has more 4- H members from small towns and cities than from the country, part of the growing trend to take the traditionally rural program into the cities and towns. A total of 463 4-H members are from the urban areas. McHenry county has 48 4-H clubs. In addition to the adult leaders, Plocher said the program is aided significantly by 155 junior leaders-older members assisting the leaders. Beef projects have shown a steady increase with 141 the past year. Food and nutrition projects totaled 374; crafts, 273; horses and ponies, 167; and home gardens, 124. Rte. 47 - WOODSTOCK 338-6454 How To Buy A Dishwasher: A Consumer Checklist Although the dishwasher was invented more than 60 years ago, throughout much of its history it was an appliance stepchild. It was not until the hous ing boom that followed World War II that the dishwasher be gan to find a place in the American household. Today, the dishwasher is no longer considered a luxury. To a gen eration raised to the idea that you don't have to have your hands in scalding dishwater three times a day to prove your worth as a homemaker, it has become a necessity. With a majority of the dish washers installed in the '50s and early '60s now well past their prime, a booming -re placement market has devel oped. Here's a checklist of what to look for in a new under- counter dishwasher, extracted from a booklet recently pre pared by the Consumers Insti tute of General Electric and Hotpoint to help make wise purchasing decisions. Good sound insulation is a must for peace of mind. Make sure the model you buy has insulation all around; not just on top or sides. It's important to con sider the type of material used for the tub interior. Metal tubs are usually stainless steel, and while chip-proof, they can later develop surface rust and even leak at the seams in extreme cases. Porcelain enamel resists surface rust and seam leaks, but can chip and rust and is diffcult to repair. Plastic coatings also resist seam leaks and are chip-proof; they can be cut, but are easily repaired. New one-piece mold ed solid plastic tubs can not rust, chip or peel. ^ Reversible door panels simplify changing your kitch en decor. Some dishwashers come with a choice of four colors: coppertone, avocado, white and harvest. Look for a built-in soft- food disposer; it will eliminate most scraping and pre-rinsing. Large or hard scraps, of course, must be removed. Wash time can be critical to getting dishes truly clean. Look for extended time wash cycles for use with heavily soiled pots and pans. Wash action is impor tant to the cleaning job. Most dishwashers have either two or three sources of water action. A water source for each rack and a rinsing shower will do a thorough job. k* If energy costs are high in your community, look for a power-saver option that lets you omit the heated drying cycle, a rinse-and-hold setting, or a water and energy saving short-wash cycle. A rinse aid dispenser is considered a necessity in hard water areas to prevent water spotting. ^ Ask acquaintances who have purchased a dishwasher recently about its perfor mance, to see if they are satisfied. Take, into consider ation the reputation of both the manufacturer iand dealer.
