Checkerboard Squares Hold Halloween Dance Plans are now in the making for a Halloween square dance Oct. 30 for present and past members of the Checkerboard Squares. It will be held in a local barn, and warm clothing will be needed. There will be a few special surprise planned to make this a really fun Halloween party. Everyone is asked to dust off the dancing shoes and join in the fun. The club held a sing-a-long square dance, Sunday, Oct. 17. Lyle Stalker and Lenny Roos called the tips, and George and Joyce Kammerer called for the round dancers. Barth of Johnsburg were united in marriage before Father Tom Lucas at St. Joseph's church, Round Lake, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Sommers, 128 W. Washington, Round Lake, and the groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Barth, 3719 Spring Grove road, Johnsburg. Special music was provided by Kathy McCray, vocalist; Dave Ross, guitar; and Wayne Petersen, organ. The altar was decorated with vases of flowers. The bride wore a floor length gown of white sata-peau enhanced with Venice lace. The bodice was fashioned with a U- shaped neckline and long fitted sleeves and the skirt fell from a slightly raised waistline into a soft A-line Silhouette sweeping into a chapel length train. The cap was Venice lace with pearls adorning it, and the veil hand- sewn by the bride, was a layer of chiffon with lace edging and four layers of tulle netting. She carried a bouquet of white daisies and baby's breath, 'decorated with yellow bows. Susan Smith of Round Lake attended the bride. She was attired in a floor length dress of brown and yellow paneled with white lace and graced across the back with a large bow. Her bouquet was made of yellow daisies, white baby's breath and yellow bows. Scott Joseph Barth served his brother as best man, and Gary Rosing was the usher. Both are from Johnsburg. The bride's mother was gowned in a floor length, jacket dress of silk guiana in light blue. The groom's mother designed her own full length dress of mint green satin crepe with gold iridescent trim and gold accessories. Following a reception for 150 guests at the Amvets hall in Round Lake, the young couple left on a honeymoon trip to Wisconsin. Upon their return, they will reside in Waukegan. TTje bride graduated from Round Lake high school in 1976 and is presently employed as a teller at the First National Bank of Deerfield. The groom graduated from McHenry high school with the class of 1972 and works at the Eagle Discount in Round Lake. Early in October, the bride was feted with a shower given by the groom's mother, and another one given by the bride's sister and maid of honor. IN CONCERT Mara Jones, a Ripon college sophomore from McHenry, is a member of the Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The wind ensemble presented a concert recently in Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon's Rodman Center for the Arts. Donald B. Cuthbert, associate professor of music, conducted the en­ semble in a wide range of selections from popular to classical. Mara is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Jones, 3323 West Bull Valley, McHenry. In observance of their golden wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Waldo N. Poerschman were honored at a dinner and reception in the Whispering Hills community center Sept. 18. Present on this happy oc­ casion were thirty-five relatives and friends including their son, Frederick Poer- srhman. and wife. Patricia, of South Bend, In.; a daughter, Mrs. Emmett (Mary Jean) O'Boyle, with her children, Jean Marie, Michael, Timothy and Mathew, of DesPlaines. Other guests were three sisters of Mr. Poerschman, Mrs. Austin (^Ethel) Felt of Roseville,'5 Mrs. Charles (Katherine) of Fort Madison, la., and Mrs. Helen Rice, daughter, Jane, and son, James, of Dubuque, la., and a niece, Mrs. Donald (Mary Lynn) Patrick. The only one present from the Original wedding party was Thomas Barthel, a cousin, from Woodruff, Wi., who came with his wife, Pauline. Mrs. Poer- schman's brothers, Lawrence Wagenknecht of Flushing, Mich., and Clarence Wagenknecht of Roselle, were unable to attend because of illness. Mr. and Mrs. Poerschman were married Sept. 15, 1926, in the cuyler Avenue Lutheran church, Chicago, by the Rev. Steinhauff. After their marriage the couple resided in Chicago until June, 1968, when they moved to McHenry. Mr. Poerschman retired in 1966 after twenty-five years in the United States postal ser­ vice. He started as a clerk in the old railway mail service, which worked mail on trains. He took a voluntary assignment in 1951 in an experimental unit dispatching mail by truck from Chicago. In March, 1952, this unit was officially designated the "Suburban Truck Ter­ minal" and was the first truck terminal in the United States. He helped organize and establish this unit, which at first served less than 100 post offices and employed only about 200 employees. Now there are branches serving hundreds of post offices in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Iowa. Mr. Poer­ schman retired in 1966, after serving fifteen years in the capacity of supervisor. The McHenry post office is a part of this system and receives all mail by truck. There is no mail service locally by train. WED 25 YEARS - Mr. and Mrs. Francis Radtke of 807 Finch trail, McHenry, celebrated their twenty-filth wedding anniversary Oct. 27. In their honor, a party was held on Saturday, the twenty-third, at the home of Don and Sharon Strach, McHenry Shores. Thirty guests were present to help celebrate this special occasion. Senior Citizens Plan Show And Tell Program At the next meeting of the Senior Citizen club of Wonder Lake there will be a Show and Tell program so members are asked to bring crafts or hobbies to display or something of in­ terest to show. The Oct. 18 meeting began by taking the blood pressure of the senior citizens at 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. with-Miss Victoria Behan of McHenry hospital supervising. This blood pressure program is open to all senior citizens of Wonder Lake. Club membership is not required. The regular meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. with the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Jack Satouris from Carthage college showed slides and lectured on his trip to Russia which proved very interesting and concluded by inviting the club members to make a bus trip to visit the college. Secretary, Mrs. Peg Thorne read minutes from previous meeting and Tom Hillier gave the treasurer's report. Bus trips were discussed and members were urged to sign up for same. When You Care Enough To Send The Very Best Plans are being made for the Christmas party. Members are urged to notify Lydia Germain 653-9456 of any member sick or hospitalized. Any member interested in bowling should meet at the McHenry bowling alley, 1 p.m. on Thursdays. The club is open to all Senior Citizens of Wonder Lake. They meet the first and third Mondays of each month at Nativity Lutheran church. A welcome awaits each and every one. Further information, call Bill Lamont 3-4748. Model Meeting For Members Of Pi Alpha Chapter Pi Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held a Model meeting Oct. 21, at the home of Mrs. Joan Cornwell, with eleven members and three guests in attendance. The theme from "The Wizard of Oz" was used to explain something about Beta Sigma Phi to the guests. A brief business meeting followed, consisting of reports given by various officers and committee chairmen. The couples' rush Silly Supper will be held Oct. 30, and the Valentine dinner dance will be held at the Old Town hall in Crysal Lake Feb. 12. The cultural program on Literature-Poetry was presented by Mrs. Stacia Russell. Zion Ladies Aid Sponsors Fall Bazaar The annual Fall bazaar of the Zion Ladies aid will be held Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran church. There will be many lovely and unique items for sale plus two full-sized quilts which will be sold by silent auction. Also featured, there will be a bake sale, a plant sale, and the country store which offers homemade candies and preserves. Coffee will be served while visitors browse.
