I»AGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, OTTOBER 29, lt7« POET'S CORNER HALLOWEEN EVE... It is midnight and the sky is black without a single shining star, you can hear in the valley beneath laughter, music, crackling fire it is the feast of warlocks and witches they are celebrating Halloween eve... O. yes. they know it is costume time for children everywhere and they don't like to be imitated not here or anywhere. So. be careful children if you don't care if you see a witch on a broomstock riding through the air and if you wear her costume she wili at least scream and pull your hair. So. once again Halloween is tonight beware of the witch, which will see you in flight - beware until midnight... ^>hen the bell rings 12 times then they return to witches mountain to their valley beneath and celebrate onc£ more with crackling fire and burning leaves But with the first light of a new day they turn into shadows and disappear and the valley will sleep once again until next year... bv Maria Heiser 1 r M c H i N R Y P L A t P s t ) L A L b . Morley, Sr., of 5613 N. Meadow Hill lane, both of McHenry, participated in the NATO Exercise "Display Deter mination" in the Medi terranean Sea. Zabrosk is a member of the 32nd Marine Amphibious unit and Morley is a crewmember aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, both deployed with the U.S. Sixth Fleet. Their commands joined with naval forces from Portugal, Italy, Turkey and the United Kingdom for the combined exercise which in cluded convoy operations, amphibious assault landings and anti-submarine warefare maneuvers. The primary objective of the exercise was to train NATO naval forces in combined sea operations, to refine NATO procedures and ensure that operational plans were current. Participating units evaluated increased standarization of doctrines, equipment and armaments among NATO forces, plus conAmand and control procedures for coor dinated action by NATO sea, land and air forces. The convoy operation tested Allied capabilities to reinforce and resupply ground forces in Southern Europe. Acting as opposing forces, NATO units simulated surface, subsurface and air attacks along the convoy's route. * "Display Determination" was one of a series of annual operations, conducted each fall from Norway to Turkey, designed to provide unified and coordinated training of national and NATO forces within the Allied European Command. A 1973 graduate of McHenry high school, Zabrosk joined the Marine Corps in May, 1974. Morley graduated from the same school in 1970 and joined the Navy in June 1972. Theory is all right for the books, but it takes practical expression of ideas to make life better. Halloween Safety Tips Carolina Sends Yams To Market With Halloween approaching, Celia Maloney, Illinois con sumer advocate advises parents of the following tips for a safe day: Check with your local police department for curfews in your area. Do not allow your children to go trick or treating alone. Children under 7 years old should be accompanied by an adult. Children over 7 years, should go with at least one other friend. Your children should be advised of their geographical limits. It's best for them to stay in their own neighborhood. Make sure your children are reminded to be careful when crossing streets. Also, tell them not to dash out between parked cars. Halloween costumes should not obstruct their vision or hamper their movement. Costumes should be made of non-flammable material. Make sure your children can be seen after dark. It's a good idea to have them carry a flashlight. Have your children check back with you during the day so you know where they are. Do not allow your children to carry a candle or flame of any type. SILK SCREENED CHRISTMAS CARDS "For That Personal Touch" Be sure and inspect all of their treats. Do not allow them to eat any of it without your authorization. Unless you know the donor, don't allow your children to eat homemade food or food that is questionably wrapped.
