Patty and Rich Harrison also dropped by to catch up on family news. FLORIDA VISITORS Mr. and Mrs. Pauer of St. Petersburg, Fla., have been visiting daughter, Tina Betts, and family for the past two weeks. They came to visit and to attend their granddaughter's wedding in Franklin Park. So they then stayed with Tina, Earl and boys for a short visit and left for home this past Monday. Now that they have gotten used to the Florida weather they were rather glad to leave this cold. Tina would like to have crawled into one of their suitcases and joined them in the warmer weather. Oh well, Tina, some day your turn will come. U.M.W. NASHVILLE Nashville, Tn., that's where Doris Low and Marge Granath of McHenry took off to last week. They traveled to Nash ville with the Vagabond club out of McHenry. 'Twas four wonderful carefree days for all of them. The entertainment on Friday night was excellent, Opryland on Saturday was fantastic with all of those musical programs, etc., and then the G?and Ole Opry Saturday night in the new opra house. All I can say is it just gives me goosebumps to be near so much talent. Friday afternoon in touring downtown Nashville and then the coun tryside seeing all the stars' homes, etc., it makes one really humble to know that there are so many people with the talent that is there for our enjoyment. Oh yes, the greatest event of all was visiting the House of Cash, seeing all of Johnny Cash's citations, etc. We were honored to get to see Johnny Cash in person at the House of Cash. This is where he has his offices and recording studio. Even our tour guide had never been so lucky as we all were that day. Pictures, oh yes, there were some taken and we hope they are good, 'cause my flash didn't work and I hope the others who took pictures are OK 'cause I've asked for a copy of Johnny Cash in particular. If ever you have a chance to go to Nashville, go it's well worth the trip. Manager of Veterinary Services Norden Laboratories protecting your healthy by Pat Chapin Pat Chapin, Director of Consumer Affairs at National Pest Control Association, 8150 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA. 221HO, answers pest control questions from consumers. Dr. Robert L. Stear, veterinary practitioner, writer and lecturer, is author of the informative column for pet owners, "You and Your Pet." The column deals with the prevention and treatment of a broad range of animal problems and offers valuable advice on pet care and training. It will appear regularly in the Plaindealer. Dr. Stear received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State university. He conducted a private practice in Nebraska for fourteen years and served as an instructor of veterinary technicians for the University of Nebraska School ot Technical Agriculture for two years. At present, Dr. Stear is manager of Veterinary Ser vices at Norden Laboratories, the nation's leading ethical Q. I have noticed recently that many peat control com panies indicated that they are "licensed" or "certified." Can you explain what this means? A. Federal Law requires that by late 1977 each pest control com p a n y must have supervisory personnel certified by the state in which you reside. All states must comply with this law. In addition, companies may be licensed, although all states do not require this. veterinary pharmaceutical company. Dr. Stear's duties with Norden consist of performing field consultation and diagnosis, coordinating field testing, handling customer product inquiries and product promotion, and engaging in technical and non-technical speaking assignments. He is a past president for the Nebraska Veterinary Medical association and currently serves on the Executive committee of the American Veterinary Medical associaiton. When a person is certi fied, he is recognized by the state to have demonstrated competence in acts and re sponsibilities associated with pest control by virtue of pas sing a written examination and, therefore, allowed to use or supervise the use of pesticides classified by law for restricted use. Licensing gives a company the authority to be in the business of controlling pests. This does not necessarily mean that the person in charge has been examined about the control of pests. Some states require an examination for licensing, others may only require that a person be registered. In any case, licens ing implies a fee paid for the right to do business. Certified applicators must demonstrate a practical know ledge of a wide variety of pests including their life cycles, types of formulations appro priate for their control and methods of application that avoid contamination of food, damage and contamination of your residence or business and exposure of people and pets. Pest control may involve outdoor application; there fore, applicators may also be required to demonstrate prac tical knowledge of environ mental conditions.
