When they were unable to discredit him by making people believe that the works were done with the help of the devil, they sought to trap Jesus by asking them to give them some sign from heaven. It was not the custom of Jesus to perform miracles or to give signs upon request. He answered the Pharisees by telling them that the sign and the prophecy had already been given to them. The coming of the Son of man had been announced and, like Jonas, but greater; even greater than Soloman -- the Son of man was among them, preaching hope and salvation. We must wonder if the Pharisees understood clearly what Jesus 9aid to them. And, if they knew he spoke of death when he said he would spend three days and three nights in the heart of the earth? Spoke, too, of resurrection -- for only Christ would spend no more than three days and nights in the heart of the earth. Some of us still mink of death as the final act, the end of everything -- unless we cling to the hope of salvation which was the constant message of the life of Christ.
