Lakemoor Press Destroyed Pumper No. 1204 is hooked to a fire hydrant. PAGE II - PLAINDKALER-FRIDAY. NOVEMBER St. 1»76 Firemen found their Sunday evening interrupted when an alarm was sounded at 5:01 sending McHenry Companies I and III to the block long Lakemoor Press, Inc., 519 W. Sheridan road in Lakemoor. Chief Glenn Peterson, of Company I, upon arriving at the scene, radioed for Company II of Johnsburg to join in fighting a the blaze. Johnsburg had just finished a car fire call. Minutes later, Companies I and II of Wonder Lake, the Fox Lake and the Wauconda fire departments were requested to help, and J individual firemen from Antioch and Barrington arrived to assist A portable saw was used to cut away the lock on an overhead door and two groups of firemen (the second group as a back up) entered the burning building in an attempt to get at the heart of the blaze. Five minutes later, the teams had to retreat as the roof started to collapse. This stint Iwas then attempted at another entrance, and again, the force of flames crushed any chances of entering the plant. A pumper, positioned at a nearby lake, pumped water to the fire and one company three-tanker transported eighteen loads of water to the blaze, but the fire proved to defeat the water by an estimated two million dollars. The plant, owned by I.S. Berlin of Chicago, employed fifty-three persons, most of them living in the Lakemoor area, who will be without jobs. Firemen hurriedly hook up their hoses. STAFF PHOTOS BY WAYNE GAYLORD A tanker arrives with more water and the men quickly set the hose in position. The block long Lakemoor Press is engulfed in flame as firemen arrive. Firemen, after dismantling a door, enter the building only to retreat minutes later when the roof starged to fall in. A wall collapses, driving the firemen away from the building as a blanket of smoke and sparks engulf their equipment. Smoke hides the burning building, setting a lonely scene for these firemen and their pumper.
