For sound, sight and smell are the three ways predator fish locate their feed. Some species of fish, like bass, use all three senses in locating prey. Yet others depend almost entirely upon one method of finding food. For example, catfish locate food by smell. Knowing how fish react to different lures or baits is elementary knowledge that is basic to fishing success. Mere are some "three S" tips from Mercury out- boards' outdoor department that will help an angler use his lures properly, and also aid in selecting and buying lures. What One Person Can Do 1 I I I I n BOB DOLAN, EX-ADDICT. PUPPETEER By the time he was 30, Bob Dolan had seen the inside of prison cells from New York to Florida, with frequent stopovers at the Federal Narcotics hospital in Lexington, Ky. Then, after a dozen arrests in a 13-year nightmare of mariuana and heroin, he reached the turning point. That was the name, Dolan recalls, of the drug rehabilitation program in Pompano Beach, Fl., where things began to change for him. During a two-year stay at Turning Point, he "turned on" to something better than drugs. He began learning the art of puppeteer ing. "I wanted to work with children, that's all I could think about at the rehabilitation center," says Dolan, now 36. "I saw a puppet program and was impressed by it. I wanted to change my life around and get some direction, and I knew that using puppets was the way." He began learning all he could about the art. By the time he had worked up his own show, the One Way Puppets, the former addict had fallen in love with one of the counsellors. The two were married, and Sue Dolan became half of the puppet enterprise. Now the Dolans and their One Way Puppets appear at church functions, shopping malls, parties and on a children's television show. Some, but not all, of the shows deal specifically with drugs. "He's a straight guy," says Chuck Zink, a Miami producer of a children's television show. "They're very nice people." Each of us can become "turned on" to our own in dividual way of reaching out to others. God will help us to find it and follow it. GIVEAWAY Puppies, golden lab with shepherd mix, Puppies all white with tan tinge. Powers, 7317 Chippewa, Wonder Lake, 111, 12-1 An Elementary Lesson To be seen, a lure must attract attention. The best way to do this is to look like some food that the predator fish is used to seeing. Fly fishermen practice this by making and work ing their flies so that they exactly imitate insects. Spoon lures look like small fish* If one side of the spoolf^is silver-colored, it will have a better chance of being seen, because sun light reflecting from this will flash much like it does from the side of a small fish feeding on the bottom or swimming along. To hear how lures "sound" to fish, have some one reel them by while you're underwater in a swimming pool. The vibra tions made by certain lures have been found to closely FINPTHE LETTERS IN TWI$ PICTURE THAT5PELL approach the sonic vibra tions made by minnows and small fish as they flee through the water. These vibrations are "heard" by fish and attract their atten tion. Some lures have hol low bodies with small pel lets inside that rattle as they swim, thus imitating live fish. Although catfish occa sionally strike artificial lures, they are usually taken on bait that they smell in the water. For years catfish enthusiasts have concocted different kinds of baits with special- formula scents. Some of the best smell baits are repug nant to human noses, but must surely smell like gour met foods to certain fish. Your Rings If You're Planning A Wedding...
