"We are inviting people to share the spirit of America with students from one of six Latin American countries" said Cheryl and Greg Collins, area representatives of Youth for I'nderstanding. an International Student Exchange program. Ines Stefani of Uruguay and Joao Andjade of Brazil will be coming to Illinois for six months beginning in January. They are part of a larger group of 1,200 students from Latin America, chosen to travel to and live in American com munities for six months. The young people come from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles, but they all have a common dream. A student from Brazil describes it well: "I am very happy to be able to have this kind of opportunity, living with an American family - participating and helping in their tlqy-to-day living. I have always dreamed of coming to this great country and having the experience of learning new customs, especially American customs, as they are the most valuable and important in my point of view. I am looking forward to meeting new people, especially young people of my own age. I think that life is beautiful when we exchange ideas and opinions and share with each other." Cheryl Collins said Youth for Understanding needs more host families for the arriving students. She also commented that 1977 is of particular in terest to young poeple from another continent to observe life in America. It is the year of the presidential inauguration when the American people are most directly able to reaffirm the principles of democracy. "We are confident that the presence of the. international student in your home, your school, and your community will enhance the months ahead. It is a rare and precious op portunity which few people have in their lifetimes-an opportunity to learn in a very personal way about people from afar," Ms. Collins noted. Youth for Understanding students become members of their new families and have the same responsibilities and privileges as other children in the home. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic staff. This article is "Coping With Surgery-Prior to the Operation"). In a society where heart transplants, brain surgery, and restructuring of major organs have become everyday oc currences, physicians sometimes lost sight of the fact that to an individual patient, his surgery, whether major or minor, takes on the proportions of a major crisis. To the patient, the fact that a particular procedure has a "99 percent chance of complete success" means nothing. "It is my body that is being cut by your knife, it is rtie that is going under the anesthetic, not a Surgery statistic." Fear of surgery is a universal experience in all patients. The fear is not necessarily in proportion to the seriousness of the surgery either. A' relatively minor procedure may well evoke the same fear of death or mutilation more realistically associated with more serious surgeries. Although much of the fear is inherent in just going through the trauma, much of it can be allevaited by taking the mystery out of the surgery. The best way to do this is to find out from the physician, not from well meaning friends, exactly what is being done and why. At times the physician may only be able to answer to the best of his knowledge, as it is often impossible to tell exactly what the problem is until the actual operation, but most physicians realize that a great deal of fear can be alleviated by sharing with the patient the full extent of his knowledge about* the problem and the procedure. Armed with as full knowledge as is possible, it is then usually helpful to talk to someone who can be trusted, about the fear itself. This does not mean talking at length with someone, who in essence is saying nothing but "There, there, everything will be alright." Talking to someone about the feeling of fear means exactly that; finding someone who can understand what fear feels like, and not be frightened himself, for that can only serve to in crease the fear and anxiety in the patient. These are ways of dealing with some of the anxiety of facing surgery, no matter how major or minor. A certain amount of anxiety as the moment of surgery approaches is inevitable, but does not have to be devastating. Talk to your doctor, get as much in formation as you can, then talk to someone who can understand your apprehension. Next: After surgery. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS New Warranty Now Offered Camera Buyers For anyone thinking about buying one of the many fine new cameras on the market, there's n^ better time than right now. The reason? A new service, available only to Chicago area, buyers at the moment, that is going to save money in the \ongjrun mean achievement in thes? flationary times. Almost all new cameras ~ those costing from $100 to $150 or more - carry a one year manufacturer's warranty against defective parts and-or \yorkmanship. And most of them generally perform without difficulty during the period. The problems that crop up with today's increasingly complex or sophisticated cameras usually occur during the second or third year of ownership. At least that's what International Camera Corp. of Chicago has experienced. The world's largest factory authorized photographic repair and service organization, In ternational Camera for more than a quarter century has watched the service records of virtually every make and model of camera, domestic and imported. Literally thousands of both still and movie cameras go through its highly skilled facilities every month. From this wholly unique service experience, In ternational Camera has developed what amounts to a low cost service policy that will protect the owner of a new camera for its first three years. This new camera service policy is now available through leading Chicago area photo shops to purchasers of new cameras. Those who buy this policy will be protecting themselves against the rapidly increasing cost of repairs, which seemingly is following the upward rise in fine camera prices. The firm estimates, for example, that repair cost will probably double in the next two or three years. and families with similar in terests.
