In celebration of the holiday season, the Woodstock Fine Arts association is sponsoring a trip into Chicago to see the Chicago ballet perform in "The Nutcracker" at McCormick Place Arie Crown theater. The ninth annual presen­ tation of "The Nutcracker" by the Chicago Tribune Charities will be directed by Ruth Page and will feature Chicago ballet principals,, Jordeen Ivanov, Barbara Pontecorvo, Gennadi Vostrikov and Bruce Steivel. Tschaikovsky's music and a large cast of Chicago area children will make this Chicago's biggest celebration of the holidays. As the clock strikes 12 on Christmas eve, the enchanting story will come alive for a little girl named Clara, and for all those who attend. The price includes both the transportation and tickets. American Legion A uxiliary News McHENRY UNIT NO. 491 By Pearl Cooper After the advancement of the flags, the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" and the pledge of allegiance and the invocation given by Chaplain Evelyn Osmon, the November meeting was called to order by President Mrs. Edward (Marge) Datz. Americanism chairman, Lauretta Homo, announced that the Americanism essay' contest rules are at the schools, and that savings bonds will betf awarded to the first place winners. ^ Children & Youth chairman, Mrs. Dennis (Grace) Latimer, asked all members to remember the needy and to please bring canned goods to the December meeting for the Christmas baskets. She also thanked those who brought them to this meeting. The CARE box was passed for the country of Guatemala. Guatemala is the country for Foreign Relations. Membership chairman, Mrs. David (Doris) Henken, an­ nounced that only fifty-six members had not paid their dues and asked all members to please pay their dues as soon as possible to make us 100 percent. She also announced that our annual membership dinner would be held Saturday, Feb. 26, and our very 'special' guest would be Elaine Murphy, department president. Marie Howe, Rehabilitation chairman, acknowledged all the members who brought gifts for the hospitalized veterans and asked the members who did not, to please bring them to the December meeting. She also asked that jewelry, beads, silver, gold or cash be brought for the travel fund for the veterans. This is used for the veterans to visit their families or for the families to visit them at the hospitals. Past President's Parley chairman, Evelyn Osmon, announced that ten past presidents had attended the county past presidents' dinner and that McHenry unit would host the next meeting to be held in April. In honor of Thanksgiving, Music chairman, Maria Guettler, led the group in the singing of "Bless This House". Birthday greetings were extended to Evelyn Osmon. Veteran craft prizes were won by Evelyn Osmon and Phyllis Grosrenaud. Vicky Bottari was not present to receive the at­ tendance award. Donations were made to the 7 Point program, Gifts to the Yanks who Gave, Hines Hospital Coffee fund, Easter Seal society, Americanism National Security fund, Auxiliary Loan & Scholarship fund, Downey hospital Canteen Books, A.F.S., Du-Page McHenry County Lung association, Gateway house and the Department President's Special Project- Sun-Dial, at the new depart­ ment headquarters in Bloom ington. There were twenty-five members present at this meeting. Make Annual Xmas Downey Visit Dedicated to bringing cheer to hospitalized veterans, Joyce Kilmer Court, C.D. of A., made the annual Christmas visit to Downey last week and the ladies were warmly greeted as they all joined together for games and refreshments. Members of the court will be meeting Dec. 16 for business and a festive Christmas party which will be hosted by Helen Mauch, Alvina Walsh, Anne Marie Hellyer, Margaret Cahill, Marian Kauth, Emma Foy, Mildred Dempsey and Kathleen Mars. - Monetary support of the Endowed Chair of the American Catholic church history project is suggested in lieu of the usual exchange gift plan. In partnership with the Catholic university of America, the Cathode Daughters of America have established the Chair to provide deeper and wider understanding of the historical rote of American Catholicism. At the November meeting happy birthdays were sung to FranQ«e'"W{mialm, and Ann Studin, and congratulations were extended Mrs. Studin who, with her husband recently celebrated their golden wed­ ding anniversary. Sue Wruck won the at­ tendance prize. Valley View Sponsors Xmas Auction The Valley View Elementary school P.T.O. is having its first Christmas auction Sunday, Dec. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. Col. Don Fluger, auctioneer, will be calling the items -- toys, household items, gift cer­ tificates, and homemade crafts. Refreshments will be available and all proceeds go toward purchasing needed items for the children at school. The school is located at 6515 W. Rt. 120, McHenry, and all are invited. Doors will be open early to view the items before the auction begins.
