This team showed hustle and gave evidence that they were brought up to the varsity by coaches who taught them the Ludwig style of play. Holding a 46-31 lead at half time after a sizzling second quarter, the boys went into a tailspin in the third period before regaining the pace. Far be it from us to say the team didn't show inexperience at times. That they did, but had what it takes to put the game away decisively. With all eyes on Mundelein's (Ireg Boyle and his 28 points, one hardly realized that our own Brian Miller was piling up a 27 poirrtMotal. Last week they defeated previously undefeated Barrington 69 to 67. Good rebounding and tough defense gave the Warriors their fourth win of the season and left them undefeated in North Suburban play with a 2 and 0 record. The Warriors and Mustangs started off the game as if there were a fire in the gum as they ran and shot up and down the floor to the delight of the fair size crowd at Buckner Gym. With all five starters scoring, the Warriors found themselves tied at 16 all with ' 2:00 remaining in the initial period. The Mustangs scored twice on baskets by Boyle and Elfering along with a charity toss to take a 5 pt. lead, but at the 10 second mark Bill Hurckes canned a 15 footer. Then on a steal, Brian Miller threw one in form mid- court at the buzzer, and the Warrior trailed by one. Miller's basket seemed just the tonic the Warriors needed. The Mustangs took a 25 to 24 lead with 6:00 remaining in the second period, and that was the last time the rest of the evening they led in the game. Big A1 Reinboldt started the ball a rolling with a lay up, and then the Warriors proceeded to score 15 unanswered points, with Miller, Hurckes and Reinboldt leading the way. At the 1:45 mark Marty Phillips' basket gave the Warriors their biggest edge of the night, a 45 to 29 margain. The Warriors walked off the floor at the intermission with a 46 to 31 lead. The Warriors were simply amazing throughout the first half. They rebounded better than they had all season, and Randy Schiller swept both boards as if he owned them. That along with a tough pressing defense had the Mustangs bewildered. With a 15 point lead the Warriors began to play a little too cautious, and as a result disaster almost struck. A perked up Mundelein five began to whittle the Warrior lead, and the home folks became quite uneasy as the quarter progressed. Brian Miller with 2 baskets and a pair of charity tosses was the only Warrior scoring in the period, and the Mustangs narrowed the gap to, a 52 to 48 deficit going into the final eight > minutes of play. The final period saw the Warriors abandon their slow down tactics, and play their usual run and gun, and the results were rewarding. Ken Durkin who came off the bench made two clutch baskets. That really put daylight between the Warriors and Mustangs, and with Miller, Reinbodlt, and Hurckes all scoring the Warriors walked off the floor with the victory. Coach Ludwig commented "our rebounding in the first half, especially the second quarter was a big help in our gaining the 15 point halftime lead". Brian Miller led the Warrior attack with his career high of 27 pts. Billy Hurckes did a line job guarding Greg Boyle, Mun­ delein high scorer. Boyle led all scorers with 28, 8 below his season average. Hurckes forced the Mustang sharp­ shooter to his left, where is not as effective. Credit must be given to the fine Mundelein guard, he is an outstanding player, but he and the Mun­ delein team will find, he can't do it all himself. He took 32 of the Mustangs 61 shots hitting on 10. Over the long season when one player takes half the shots, you are looking for trouble. On Friday they lost a heartbreaker to Mundelein 44 to 43 after leading most of the way. Don Bentz again led the sophs with 19 points. However, on Saturday night the local cagers ran and romped over Zion Benton by the score of 77 to 67. Leading by as much as 18 points in the final period, the local boys had a lot of fun, and the genial young coach cleared his bench early in the final period. Scott Dixon with 20 pts., Bentz with 17, and freshman Chris Dixon with 16 paced the local attack.
