Dr«ler*c«»po Maga/im- The days of teaching children how to tell time by the old "big hand is on the nine-, little hand is on the three" method may be fast disappearing, ush ered out by the electronic digital watch, the new timekeeping method that presents the time precise ly/ accurately and clearly -- as 2:46. not "about quarter to three" -- using the latest in space-age technology The "no-hands" digital watch, made possible by the same advances in elec tronics that created the pocket calculator, has shot up in popularity in the last few years to the point where some watch indus try executives predict that by 1980 one out of every three batches sold will be a digital model. What's the reason for this sudden popularity, and why are people flock ing to buy digital watches when a glance at a lower- priced conventional dial- and-hand model will tell the time just as easily? The biggest appeal of the digital watch is its accuracy -- accuracy im possible to achieve with a standard mechanical „watch. ^ Most conventional watches are considered ac curate if they only lose a minute or two each day. Most digital watches, on the other hand, are accu rate to within one minute a year, without winding or resetting. The digital watch is also easier to take care of. Since it has no moving parts to jam or break, it is a lot more rugged than the conventional watch. And it needs no mainte nance such as oiling or ..cleaning -- all that's nec essary is to change its batteries about once a year. The digital watch's ap pearance also has great appeal to many people who like the contemporary look of its opaque glass face or constantly shifting numerals. Its appearance car also be a drawback, however. Because of its batteries, the digital watch is gen erally thicker and bulkier than most mechanical watches. For this reason, fewer models are available for women than in con ventional watches. One type of digital watch, the light-emitting diode tLED* model, uses a time display powered by irts own tiny light spurce. When its button is pushed, the time appears as small red, numbers; hold the button in tfeadily and the secpnds tick off. The other type, the liq uid-crystal display (LCD) watch, uses a different method: it shows the time by reflecting the < light around it. The LCD watch offers a constant display of the time, with one number melting into the next, ap pearing brighter or dim mer depending on the surrounding lighting con ditions. Be sure to shop around for the best price before you buy. As these digital models become more wide spread prices are going down rapidly, so make sure you find the best value for your money by comparing several models and stores Much of the price is determined by the styling -- digital watches are available ranging from under $20 models with plastic ban3| and cases to extremely high-priced solid-gold models. And remember to ask for a complete demonstra tion. so you'll know how to set your/ watch and operate all its features when you get it home. But whichever digital watch you decide to buy, be prepared for greater accuracy than you've ever had from a watch before -- and all with a "Look, Ma, hands!" space-age look Calculator companion A kiss on the hand may be quite continental, but a calculataf^e^uld very well prov^to be a girl's best friend! Gone are the days of the dingbat shopper" image; it's a well-known fact that women comprise the strongest and largest part of the consumer market, and they are a very wise majority indeed! With the current pinch in the economy, the wom an shopper is more alert than ever to the cost of individual items -- sale prices and tax included. What could be a better help at such a time for the smart consumer than a handy pocket calculator to take along on all shop ping trips? With it she can calcu late just exactly»how much of a bargain that 20% off sale is without having to "draw in the air." She can easily figure up the value of multiple purchases (save by the sixes!), or evaluate just how much of a bargain that appliance will be af ter all of the tax has been added on. s that keeps BOUNCING BACK There was once a dollar all crisp and new, spent in a store by someone like you. Someone thinking of their home town, Who wanted the dollars to stay around. The store gave the dollar to farmer Brown, who had brought some of his produce to town. > . A chain of reaction that gladdens our hearts. The parts man put it back on its way. hor his wife he bought a dress that very day. So the clothier was able to fix the store, That kept the dollar going some more. Then the carpenter had something to do, Someone benefited -- maybe you!
