This past week's situation of the fox hunt scheduled near Royal. II., is an example. Is there no way to handle a situation claimed to be threatening to farmers' stock by the mayor of Royal and other local spokesmen than to bludgeon cornered and frightened animals with baseball bats and other weapons after flushing them from cover? A lot of people think there must be. The hunt was halted after members of humane groups aroused people and alerted the news media. Before the dust settled there were hundreds of calls to the Governor's office from all parts of the state and as far away as New Mexico and Nevada, voicing outrage. One who is outraged is Sally Justin. Ms. Justin is a wildlife rehabilitator in McHenry County who from the time she was a little girl has aided in jured and maimed wildlife. Naturally she is on the foxes' side in this issue and her views are worth serious thought. She ^^says the main diet of a fox in its '^natural habitatis small rodents; and coyotes are one of the best anti-pollution garbage disposals there are. She feels it's the exception, not the rule, among these species to invade man's domain for food. But what can they do when man himself is responsible for destroying the animals' habitat? And it's usually the old, the weak, the maimed who have been caught in traps, who turn to this marauding, desperate for food. The deplorable tendency of too many people to dump their unwanted dogs on farmers' land and other open country is causing more havoc than the dwindling numbers of foxes and coyotes createXShe can't help but wonder why people don't bother to read about these animals and learn just what services they perform for mankind because of their natural tendencies instead of turning to extinction of a specieg as the only solution. In her work of restoring to health various species of wildlife when they suffer from natural causes or an encounter with man, she has a good record of recoveries. Following their recovery she re-locates the wildlife to suitable areas where hopefully they can follow Nature's pattern for them. Care is taken to obtain the kind of food they would forage for themselves so that once turned loose they will not be helpless.
