I»> JOSKPH COOLS stall ps vi hologist -- n«w$ from the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic of McHenry County (Editor's Note: This is the tenth in a series of specially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Coolfe is a psychologist on the Family Service and Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping-Alcoholism") Diagnosing the disease of alcoholism is not as definitive as the diagnosis of other medical problems, such as diabetes or heart disease. For this reason, it is usually up to the individual himself to decide whether he or she has a drinking problem or is an alcoholic. Experts in the study of alcohol related problems have never been able to agree on a precise definition of what is meant by alcoholism. The condition of alcoholism has been variously described as a disease, an addiction, an allergy to alcohol, a problem in socialization, a character flaw, and other definitions , too numerous to mention. Perhaps the most practical and easiest definition of alcoholism is that a person may be considered to be an alcoholic when he finds that he repeatedly loses control over his ability to drink in moderation. That is, even though a person may promise himself and others that he will limit himself to three or four drinks, he finds excuses or rationalizations to exceed that number. The key to un derstanding what has happened is the element of control. At this point, the person no longer has the ability to control his drinking, even when he wants to. The element of control differentiates between the social drinker and ~the alcoholic. As control is a very personal attribute, each person must decide for himself at what point he is unable to control his drinking. Others, including AA members, doctors, and alcoholism counselors, can help but it is the person himself that must be convinced that he can no longer control his drinking. Bert, of 213 North Emerald drive, McHenry, has developed an invention which he is now introducing to manufacturers. This invention presents an industrial spraying apparatus for applying paint to overhead pipes. It is adjustable to various sizes of pipes. The apparatus may be supported around the pipe to be sprayed, by a pair of spaced-apart, contoured support members. Paint flows through conduits in each of " these members to nozzles directed toward the pipe. An air supply means atomizes the paint and assists its flow. The user of the apparatus can retain and move the support members, relative to the pipe, due to an extension means which receives in terchangeable handles of different lengths. In industrial use, the apparatus reduces WATEK WARNING c The Illinois Department" of Public Health last week cautioned citizens who are hauling water to supplement inadequate water sources. TAX TIPS • The Illinois Revenue department last week urged taxpayers to file their tax returns early but to complete their federal income tax returns before starting work on their Illinois tax forms. More than half the 4.5 million income tax payers in the state will get refunds this year according to department estimates, and refund checks are sent most promptly to taxpayers who file early.
