Her English is now fluent Residents of the college district who want to take the GED classes that Mrs. Yanez and Forsbeck have found so helpful may sign up now for the Spring semester. There is no charge and classes begin the week of Jan. 31. There are classes in Crystal Lake. McHenry and Woodstock. Both daytime and evening sessions are offered. The program in volves four to fiy$ hours per week in class with students attending classes two days a week. To take the GED test and receive a certificate, a student must be at least 19 years old, out of school for a minimum of- one year and a state resident for 30 days. , Ed Eisner, MCC director of special programs, stated, "The program is not meant to replace high school. If a student is in high school he-she should attempt to earn a diploma. But if he-she has dropped out and cannot re-enroll, then perhaps GED is the answer. The college's work in job placement shows the GED certificate can be a big help in job seeking." Residents may call the college at 455-3700, or the McHenry county CETA outreach office at 338-7100 for more information. What One Person Can Do Giovanna D'Agostino "tor Mama D, as students fondly nicknamed her) got into the restaurant business ac cidentally. Once there, her particular mixture of love, psychology and pasta lifted a small sandwich shop in Min neapolis onto a list of the 12 best restaurants in the United States. "Love is still the main ingredient of any meal," says Mama D, who began helping one of her sons with his fast food shop ten years ago, when her husband died. Finding that her soul wasn't in fixing sand wiches, Mama D began making pasta dishes for a few customers. These told others, and soon the shop was filled with happy patrons enjoying her mixture of wit, wisdom and spaghetti. Along with fame as a cook came a discovery that she had instant rapport with troubled students. A deeply religious woman who once wanted to be a nun, Mama D fed the students both physically and spiritually, and they, in turn, trusted her. In 1975, she was chosen Woman of the Year in Minneapolis. "Those kids changed my life. J love them," Mama D declares. "No one can say anthing bad about young people to me. In my day, no one crossed the tracks to get to know anyone on the other side. These kids do. They have taught us all what it is to love all kinds of people." PAGE 4 - PI. McHenry Her cooking fame has pushed Mama D into writing a cook book, but she still maintains that "cooking for your family with love is the most important thing. No matter what else changes, a mother is the heart of the family and the kitchen is the heart of the home." A genuine concern for God's creatures is found in loving attention to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. As that is the secret of Mama D's life, it can be the secret of each lover of God and humanity. MCC Students » The Return To Books Ed Eisner, left, MCC director of special programs, reviews a text used in the General Educational Development program with Roy Forsbeck, Woodstock, who has earned his GED certificate and Epifania Yanez, Harvard, who is currently in the GED program. Roy Forsbeck worked two jobs simultaneously to put this three daughters through college and last year decided it was his turn to be a student After ten weeks in McHenry County college's General Educational Development classes (GED) he received a GED certificate equivalent to a high school diploma. He is currently enrolled as a full time college student at MCC. seeking a degree in social science. The 68 year-old Woodstock resident hopes to do volunteer work when he finishes his studies. Others take the GED classes because they want a better job. This was the main reason Epifania Yanez of Harvard enrolled. The Classes have also helped her make friends and practice English by taking classes in English as a second language. Mrs Yanez has been working on GED for almost a year and says that her test scores are steadily improving. The 53-year-old widow said she hopes to become a bookkeeper after she passes the tests to get a GED certificate. "As a boy I never saw the inside of a high school," commented Forsbeck. "To go to a regular high school as an adult would take five or six years of part-time work. When I heard about the GED program I said, 'why don't I try it?' I've been an avid reader for years and I've always wanted to earn a diploma." Mrs. Yanez grew up in Texas and after quitting school in the seventh grade to do farm work she forgot the English she had learned in the classroom. "I never had to use English. I was home doing housework and being a mother. Everyone in our small town spoke Spanish," she recalls. When she moved to Harvard in 1964 she found it FEBRUARY SPECIALS!!!
