I This beautiful St. Bernard was abandoned by her owners who moved to Tennessee and left her behind. We hope she'll find a new owner who really appreciates her sweet and calm disposition, her good manners, her amiability with children. She's young - about 1 year. At the county shelter, 11608 Banford road, Woodstock, phone 338-7040. (Photo supplied by Photocom) HELPING PAWS Bv Estelle Atwell Agreed" Our four-footed friends are totally dependent on us. Especially the strays; the unwanted; the injured or sick - they need us desperately. And there aren't just one or two ways we can contribute to their welfare; there are so many that it would be difficult to find a person who couldn't offer something to the cause of animal welfare. Money, of course, is always welcome, and helps move various programs along. But what we discsss today are suggestions for participation that require your time, as little or as much of it as you can give. And now that the holidays are over and perhaps you have a little more of this commodity to spare, here are some ways you could help Helping Paws aid our four- footed friends: Temporary homes for strays while we advertise - sometimes we ask that you hold on to them for 6 weeks or so. Construction of items needed for pets - dog houses, outside pens, billboard signs, etc. Usually a man's work, we certainly would welcome the male presence for those projects as well as for other aspects of our work. We have one project going already that involves sewing. Our furry mascots. Puss and Pooch are put together from pieces cut from patterns. This is where you come in. Do you have a sewing machine? The finished products will be sold in shopping center booths, at fairs, and art shows, and we will need hosts and hostesses when we enter these events to promote our cause and to sell our fund-raising items. And general fund raising - ideas wanted, people wanted; to carry out the ideas; lots of public relations work. Do you like to work with children? Our Junior Auxiliary program is in its infancy so ideas that you might bring to it would be of great value. It could be structured very much like the scouting programs. We need people to be in charge who can teach children the basic values of pet ownership and care; hold a pet party; take nature walks. Anything we've mentioned turn you on? We hope so. But we have not run out of suggestions for people who want to help. And we'll list more next week. If you can help please call 459-2641, the Helping Paws office, open 10 to noon and 1 to 3, Monday through Friday. Or, call 312- 658-7221 alternative hours.
