Bv Estelle Atwell You cannot keep the dog or cat you just acquired. It is found that your child has an allergy to the pet. It's a bad blow to the child to lose a pet. How to make it less painful? Here's what a local allergy specialist suggests if the family must part with a pet altogether. He says sometimes it can be done in stages by boarding the animal elsewhere to provide a break in the relationship which allows the child to be weaned away before the final separation. Also, it may be better to take the child away from the pet, than the pet away from the child. Perhaps the child could be taken on a trip or be sent to camp or to stay with a relative while another home is found for the pet. .It's important that the child believe the pet will be happy. A picture of his new home or of other animals he will be with may help. A new bike, a radio or phonograph may do it; most children will respond to the substitute in a relatively short time. Do not substitute stuffed animals which may produce allergic reactions. Although fish do not provide the opportunity for love and affection like a dog or cat. a small aquarium may divert the child's attention during the initial departure period. Be certain the fish food or filtering elements do not introduce new allergies. If the child is one who shows unusual love for all animals and is affected profoundly by the loss, transference may be brought about if the parents take an interest in. say, wild birds. Build bird-feeders and bird houses. Bird watcb or go on bird walks. Buy books about birds; decorate the child's room with bird pictures. However, it would be inad visable to have a bird for a house pet Another course; the child may need a new friend. See if there are schoolmates who could be invited home as a special friend.
