New Members Join Church New members were received at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church Sunday at the 10:30a.m. worship service. By Dick Rabbitt Coach Tom Maple's Grant High Bulldogs came from behind Tuesday night to edge Belvidere in the regional opener at West Campus 60 to 55. The Bucs, winner of only five games this season, jumped out to an early 6 to 2 lead, and with Gustafson and Beyers leading the scoring led at the end of the first period 17 to 16. The second period the game was one turnover after another, but the Bucs hung on to lead at the intermission 29 to 27. In the third period Grant, made its move. At the' 5:00 mark the score was knotted at 33 all, when Kerry Kelley, Grant s fine forward, took charge. Throughout the rest of the period he hit for 6 baskets and a pair of charity tosses for a total of 14 pts. to boost Grant into a 45-42 margin. Early in the final quarter the Bucs had a chance to break the game wide open Six times they had possession and 6 times they failed to get a shot at' the basket. At the 1:30 mark trailing by one, the Bucs again lost the ball, but regained possession on a missed free throw. With 56 seconds remaining and down by one point, the Bucs worked the ball around, buta careless shot went astray. Grant recovered, and Soderman after being fouled, put the game out of reach with a pair of free throws. An anti climax foul with seconds remaining, and Mike Taylor sunk the pair for a 60 to 55 win The Bulldogs will meet the winner of the Warrior- Woodstock game Friday in the finals. The teams will be made up of faculty, students and adults. Shaw Bros, bring their combination of circus at­ mosphere and rodeo thrills to town for the benefit of the Pep Club. The old saying, "stubborn as a mule", will be exemplified when the local boys match wits with the donkeys. The odds are that in most cases the donkeys will win. The old rodeo days will be brought to mind when the local Gene Autrys and Roy Rogers take their spills and bounces. There will be plenty of laughs for the entire family during this fun-filled evening. You haven't witnessed basketball until you have seen it played on donkeys. It is really a little different than regular basketball. Taking a shot at the basket, when the donkey decides to go the other way, or decides you have been on his back too long, can be very difficult. Every shot at the basket must be taken while sitting on the donkey. It was one of their better offensive games of the season and the Dynamatic Duo" of Miller and Hurckes scored 58 pts. for the Warriors. Speaking of the two Warriors, congratulations are in order for their selection to the North Suburban All Conference team. It is quite an honor for these two young men, and both richly deserved the honor. News from New Mexico. Marty Zeller former Warrior, set a new school rebounding record for New Mexico Military. The young lad picked off 309 this season, while averaging 17 pts. per game. Tomorrow Marty will play in the Western Athletic Jr. College Conference All Star game in Abilene Texas. Major college scouts from all over the country will be in attendance, and here is hoping that Marty will give them an eyeful. Congratulations are also in order to Coach Bud Grover and his Marian Central Hurricanes. They won their first regional championship last Friday night when they defeated Marengo in a thriller 49 to 47. Saw a most ususual game when the Canes defeated Hebron 42 to 20. Hebron led at the end of the first period 6 to 2, and the Canes fought back to take a 10 toil lead at the intermission. Hebron, still holding the ball, fell behind 16 to 10 going into the final period. Forced out of their stall, Hebron was no match for the taller, talented Marian five, and went down to a rousing 42 to 20 defeat. Received that very interesting letter from Alex Justen. The March "Madness' is on with both Class A and AA tourneys in progress this week. Already the Number One Class A team St. Michael's of Chicago has fallen by the wayside, and many more favorites are expected to follow. Phillips of Chicago seems to be everyone's choice for the Class AA title, but don't count out some of the Suburban schools. There are a lot of good teams still left in the Chicago area. You would think that a veteran official would see to it, that a game he worked in tournament play would not go into 4 overtimes. However Ken Swanson of the Warrior staff, worked the game at Evanston Monday night that went into four overtimes. For an old "duffer" he should know better. Another request to go down memory lane, this time the county tournament at St. Mary's gym in Woodstock in December 1947. The Warriors in the opening round defeated the Richmond Rockets 52 to 35.
