PAGE 8 ' Don't go shopping for any upholstered furniture without these helpful hints Since looks can be the most deceiving when shop ping for upholstered fur niture, the best way to tackle such a major invest ment is to come to the -store armed with knowl edge. Know the four under lying construction details that indicate good quality and look for them in each piece you consider. First telltale signs are the joining of seams and positioning of cushions If •the pattern is matched all over and there are no dan gling threads, test one has been passed. Frame construction is another good indicator. Look for well-seasoned hardwood frames built sturdily with doweled joints and screwed and glued corner blocks. - Quick frame tests in clude scanning the finish of exposed wood parts and lifting the piece. Heaviness denotes good quality hard wood. Rub your hand over the surface where the wood frame stops to make sure there are no sharp edges that can work through the Why would anyone have a garage built without considering the Onan brothers' offer? to 400 4* ho' -i •v* & wmmm jnwr Nobody, but nobody can beat it! Any frame move ment means hold on to your money--the joints are loose. Today, most upholstery fabrics are entirely or partially made of synthet ic fabrics and will stretch with use. Therefore, the third test point to look for is the inside of the cushion. Better quality cushions are filled with down rath er than with synthetics because feathers and down are loose within an envelope or partition, and they allow the cushions to spring back and to con form to the shape of the upholstery fabric as it stretches. Down-filled cushions can expand to fill the extra space, synthetic fill ers, on the other hand, are inflexible and the piece will develop wrin kles and an unfilled look as the outer cushion fab ric stretches. By checking the bedding law label you can find out if your chosen piece is down-filled. This simply means that It is filled with a blend of down and feath ers in varying proportions Down-filled cushions are recognizable in two basic designs. One is an all-down cushion made with partitions and divid ers to keep the down from shifting. In the second type, the combination cushion, a down envelope surrounds central cores of soft springs, polyester or poly- form filled with colled springs. Construction of seat springs revealed under the cushions by the width of the deck, is fourth and fi nal checkpoint. If you are unsure about them ask the salesperson. Eight-way hand-tied coil springs are the best but also good are six-way drop-in preformed units and wire springs or web bing in slim-line decks. Shallow-decked no-sag springs are Inferior. All deck springing should be insulated by resilient pad ding. Test for this by lift ing the cushions and feel ing for the springs under the fabric. Individual springs that can be felt indicate early wear prob lems. Fear of making a mis take in the selection of major upholstered pieces prevents many shoppers from experiencing the fun that furniture shopping is supposed to be. If you have any doubts, just ask the salesperson about the four undercover checkpoints. Consider the needs of your household- such as children and pets --when choosing fabric. You can expect to be liv ing with furniture made of fine wood, down and good fabric for the next 10 to twenty years. So now that you know what to look for, have fun and shop with confidence. 60L0EN GLEAMS Wherever there is a hu man being there is a chance for a kindness. -Seneca.
