PAGE 18 Historic sites receiving free roofing with help of program CertainTeed Corpora tion has produced a four- color, 16-page booklet en titled "Where History Happened," highlighting historic sites selected for the company's nationwide Building Restoration Pro gram. Under the guidelines of the Program, initiated in 1974, sites which are cho sen receive free roofing from CertainTeed. a lead ing building materials manufacturer. Usually wood-look Hallmark roof ing shingles are chosen. Nineteen buildings have been included in the pro gram to date. These in clude the birthplaces of Thomas Edison, John Adams, and John Quincy Adams; as well as homes important to authors Mark Twain and Willa Cather. Oakleigh Mansion and Ashland Plantation are two of the selections from the South. Daniel Boone planned the expedition to blaze the Cumberland Gap, at Ashland, sponsor ed by its owner, Richard Handerson, a leading colo nial patriot. Most received wood-look Hallmark shangles. Included are the Hammond House, Eastview, N.Y. (top photo), and the Honolulu House, Marshall, Mich, (bottom photo). Hammond House, built in 1719, was the home of early Amcriran patriots and site of several of Washington's military meetings. Honolulu House, built in 1860, is a miniature version of the Hawaiian home of the U.S. Consul lo Hawaii in the 1850s. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and on the Historic American Building* Survey.
