r I'.U.E - PLAINDKALER-FRIDAY. MARCH 11. 1977 Community Leaders Women's Role.. LILLIAN BOLGER (Story series and photo by Jeff Bonato) A tree cannot stand tall without solid roots. A building cannot stand tall without a solid foundation. And it can also be said that many residents of the McHenry community could not stand as tall today without a solid educational foundation--a foundation provided by teachers and community leaders like Mrs. Lillian Bolger. The foundation for all education is language, and for many years at McHenry high school, it was Mrs. Bolger who provided that foundation to green, scared, incoming fresh men. It is a sad, but true fact, that when people admire a tree, it is the fruit or the blossom which they regard, forgetting the base, without which the fruit could never be. It is often the music teacher, or the art instructor, or the accounting professor, who receives the credit for shaping and molding a person's future. But without the mastery of basic language, taught by teachers like Mrs. Bolger, there would be no art career, no* music career, no business career.. Can there be any tougher job in education than teaching freshman English? Here are 14- year-olds, in a new building, still wet-behind-the-ears, suddenly thrust into a pressure cooker where every move will shape the rest of their lives. It takes a special type person like Mrs. Bolger, to work with, not against the students, and to find joy and inner peace by helping children through not just basic English, but through life itself. Besides teaching English, Mrs. Bolger was also a coun selor at the local high school. Though she is too modest to say so, more than a few students found their futures taking an upward swing due to her guidance and assistance. Mrs. Bolger retired from teaching and guidance in June of 1970. But in no way has she retired from active service. In fact, she is still serving as the "foundation" for several worthwhile projects. "After I retired, I knew life would be very empty if I didn't get involved." she said. "I once read something saying that we should do whatever we could to make the world a better place to be in." "That was the inspiration." Presently, Mrs. Bolger is serving as the "foundation" for the Wheels on Meals program, coordinated through Church Women United (CWU). "It was Mae Stinespring who really initiated the program," Mrs. Bolger said. "She lit the match, and now I'm just sort of the 'hub of the wheel', with all the many wonderful workers being the spokes reaching out to the people." "The real heroes of the Meals on Wheels program are the men and women who deliver the meals through ice and snow." "Actually, the program is so well-organized it runs itself," ,*she added. "The alertness of the volunteers who take the meals is remarkable. When they sense something is wrong, they are able to get people to the hospital." Persons visiting the McHenry hospital may run into Mrs. Bolger behind the counter in the gift and snack shop. She works there as a volunteer one evening each week. Speaking of the 'pink ladies', Mrs. Bolger says that, "we all work together. Many former students of mine come into the hospital, and it is always nice to see them again and find out GET PROFESSIONAL carpet cleaning results! If there is a philosophy she has in doing so much volunteer work, it is that, "the satisfaction and joy one gets out of doing these things far surpasses anything you give to someone else." Besides her community work, Mrs. Bolger always finds time for her family. On this particular day, she was baby sitting for her four-year-old grandson, one of nine grand children. Her daughter, Mary Ann, lives in McHenry, while a son, John, is the director of Public Affairs for the Pennsylvania Bankers association. Yes, Mrs. Bolger has con tinually served the community for over thirty years. And her eyes glisten when she speaks of former pupils who have done well. It's a glow of quiet pride - pride in knowing that the foundation she helped lay has resulted in the con struction of something worhtwhile. Not a tree or a building--but worthwhile individuals.
