On The Sidelines by Dick Robbitt The recent court ruling involving St. Michael's and Walther Lutheran may open a can of worms for the future. The big question in prep circles, are the courts going to be involved in every dispute? Although the official scorer and officials were in error, nevertheless there is a rule, covering such occurences. / For once the I.H.S.A. was right, but they were overuled by a judge, and in his judgement St. Michael's did not get due process. In fact Class A hadthree court rulings last week, and more may come before the end of the stale tournament. In recent times we have had court rulings on a girl from Mundelein becoming a member of the boys gymnastics team, a girl in a park district in Chicago allowed to play """football on a boys team. One thing that this will do, is to make the officials better knowledgeable of the rules. Any misinterperation of the rules may result in a court case in the future. It is too bad when athletic contests cannot be settled on the court, rather than in the court room. In looking back to the Ouija Board of Dave Mihevc, for the third year in a row he picked the winner of the North Suburban. This year he picked Barrington with a 15 and 1 record, they ended up 14 and 2, not a bad guess in November. He also picked Crown for last place, but in between, well we won't discuss those teams. That smiling young fellow on the Woodstock Blue Streak bench the other night was none other than former Warrior Paul Morenz. Paul is the assistant coach at Woodstock and no doubt contributed to the Blue Streak success in the regional. From all reports, Paul is doing a super job, and is well liked and respected by the folks in Woodstock. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Our trip down memory lane this week is going to be a short one. A year ago tomorrow, the Warriors with a fourth period rally overcame certain defeat and won the sectional in Rockford. They defeated Rockford Guilford in a thriller, that will be remembered for years to come 59 to 58. For the 1,500 Warrior fans who traveled to Rockford, it was a glorious night indeed, for it enabled the Warriors to enter the Sweet 16 for the first time in the history of the school. Trailing by 7 pts. going into the final period, the Warriors put on a display that left the fans spellbound Who can forget "Radar" Reilly's live baskets in the final period, all from 15 to 20 feet away from the basket. Or Decker's important free throw, with a howling Guilford crowd screaming in his ears. Or the big fellow, Steve Koerber, sweeping the boards as if he owned the gym. The rest of the Warrior squad on that memorable night who contributed to that great victory. Indeed it was a great night for the Warriors and the city of McHenry. With Sectional time at hand, it is nice to go back and remember that night in Rockford. Maybe we can do it again in the near future.
