Taiwan and Turkey moved into the category of each having a million or more telephones as the world added more than 21 million new telephones during 1975. These and other statistics are contained in the current edition of "The World's Telephones", a booklet published annually by the American Telephone and Telegraph company's Long Lines department. Information on some 1,400 principal cities located throughout the world is con tained in the 28-page booklet. The material is dated as of Jan. 1. 1976, and is the most recent available since it takes a year to gather and publish the data. According to the booklet, the number of telephones in the world as of Jan. 1, 1976, was /*:V79.6 million, an increase from 1975 of 21.2 million, or 5 9 per cent. It marked the first time in twenty years that the annual rate of increase dipped below 6 percent The ^hree new entries on the list of places having more than a million telephones have joine^ thirty-three other political entities sharing this distinction. Still at the top of this list is the United States with 149.011,000 telephones in ser vice. Japan is a distant second with 45,514.709. and the United Kingdom is third with 21.035,602. In fourth place with 16,949,000 phones is the Soviet Union. Fifth and sixth places are.held by Italy with 14,495,677 and France with 13,833,346. Since they have the most telephones by far, it follows that Americans are the most talkative. They placed a total of 204 6 billion local and long distance calls during 1975, a record number. Japan again was a distant second in this category with 45.7 billion calls. An indication that France also is a talkative nation can be found in the fact that although that country ranked sixth in the number of telephones, it ranked third in the number of calls with 29.3 billion for the year. Telephone growth among countries was paced by Brazil where the number of telephones jumped 27.1 per cent for the year to a total of 3,371,284. Second in the growth category was Taiwan with an increase of 24.1 per cent to a total of 1,117,989 The United States had an increase of 3/5 per cent for the year. In terms of telephones per 100 population the United States continued to lead with 69.49 phones for every 100 citizens. Sweden was second in this category with a per capita telephone count of 66.07 per 100 citizens.. Third was Switer zerland with 61.09 telephones per 100 population. The world average is 9.1 telephones for each 100 persons. Physical Combat Very Hazardous To Animals 4 DAY SALE kV/it" M IJ 4 DAY SALE Sale Ends Saturday, March 19 Special buy. Disney favorites. Cockfighting and other contests that pit one animal against another in direct physical combat have probably been in existence since before recorded history. It is a sport that appeals to certain people and will never be completely stopped. However, these contests are inhumane to the animals involved, and persons who engage in these activities are subject to prosecution under both state and federal laws. Jim Austin, chief in vestigator for the Meat, Poultry and Livestock In spection division of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, says that 75 to 80 percent of the roosters involved in cockfights die sooner or later from their injuries. "I wish I could say that cock- fighting is not a problem in Illinois," Austin- said. "However, we recently prosecuted three cases, and four other cases are pending " The problem isn't really with cockfights being held in this state, but rather with in dividuals who are raising and training gamecocks here, and transporting them to nearby states for fights or selling them, Austin pointed out. "Such activities are expressly prohibited by the 1975 Humane Care for animals act and we intend to prosecute individuals who violate these regulations to the fullest extent of the law." The manufacture, sale, transport or advertising of equipment used in cockfighting is also illegal, Austin noted. "While cockfighting is not the biggest problem we are facing in animal health,'we want to make sure that eyeryone is aware of the laws prohibiting these activities," Austin said. "Even those who merely attend a cockfight are violating the law and are subjet to a fine of up to $500 and six months in jail " In addition to the state law, the Animal Welfare act amendments of 1976 make it a federal violation to transport an animal across state lines with intent to enter it in a fight. The penalty for a federal violation is up to $5,000 and one year in jail. "The cases our department has handled recently are part of a determined attempt to shut down this activity in Illinois," Austin said. "This sport is gambling-oriented and ex tremely cruel to the animals involved. We are making every effort to put an end to this practice." EDUCATION DOLLARS State School Supt. Joseph M Cronin recently announced that nineteen major education organizations, including the State Board of Education and Illinois Office of Education, are mounting an effort to keep alive federal programs that provide nearly $300 million to school systems in the state. The education groups are spon soring nine hearings from March 14 to April 18 to obtain testimony on how the programs are working at the local level and what the impact would be if the federally funded programs were discontinued.
