Plan St. Patrick's Dinner MARCH McHenry Kiwanis club president, Chuck Larson, right, flips calendar to disclose a red letter day, March 17, when the club will sponsor its annual corned beef and cabbage dinner. Unit 491, with twenty-seven members and live guests present, was con­ ducted by President Margaret Datz, at the American Legion post home. The "Star Spangled Banner" was sung by the members, the pledge of allegiance recited in unison and the chaplain, Evelyn Osmon, led the group in the invocation Special quests at the meeting were Dr Robert Kessler, on the staff at McHenry hospital, McHenry Medical Group and a board member of the McHenry County American Cancer society; Mrs. Frank Gregory and Mrs. Joseph Condon, volunteers for the Cancer society. Cancer films and a question and answer session was conducted by Dr. Kessler. L a u r e t t a H o m o , Americanism chairman, an­ nounced the winners of the Americanism Essay contest. Barb Pintozzi, McHenry Junior high, was winner of first place; Karen Strahman, McHenry Junior high, was winner of second place; and the third place winner was announced as Darlene Grenier, Parkland Junior high All winnners and their mothers will be invited as guests to the annual Gold Star pot-luck dinner to receive their awards. This meeting will be held in May. Tina Boeker and Evelyn Osmon was announced as delegates to the McHenry County council meetings, with Midge Scharf and Grace Latimer as alternates. McHenry unit was to be host for the March meeting. Delegates to the 11th district mid-winter convention to be held in Glen Ellyn were an­ nounced as Ruth Mrachek, Pearl Cooper, Margaret Datz, Lauretta Homo, Betty Lou Smith, Evelyn Osmon and Tina Boeker Lauretta Homo, Margaret Datz and Pearl Cooper are to represent the unit at the annual Patriotic con­ ference in Chicago. It was announced that a Father-Daughter banquet was to be held and all Juniors and their fathers are invited to attend. Evelyn Osmon an­ nounced that she would hold a past presidents' meeting at her home and all past presidents are asked to bring nylons, to be cut for the Veterans Craft Exchange. Also usable jewelery is needed for the woman patients at North Chicago hospital. The Legion Birthday party will be held on Sunday, March 4-H offers many opportunites for youth to develop their skills in selected project areas. Foods is just one of the fifty project areas members can choose from says Kathi Heberer, McHenry county Extension advisor. Cooking terms, the cutting and mixing of foods, and recipes about baking foods in the oven are areas covered in these two projects. Information on why we need to eat foods from each of the basic 4 Food Groups increases their nutrition knowledge. Meals Today the Easy Way: is for the cooks of today. Today meals are more varied, more interesting, more quickly and easily prepared and better tasting than ever before. With mixes, canned and frozen foods, nonstick pans and other "Now" projects that save time cooking and cleaning those enrolled in this project learn that the convenience way to cook is also creative -- "doing your thing" with a mix or a basic dish, adding a cup of this or a sprinkling of that for a pleasing change of taste. Preservation Canning and Freezing: Give information on the preservation of Fruits and Vegetables to make it possible for us to have greater variety of color, texture, and flavor in our meals throughout the year. Meat in Your Meals: Meat is one of the most expensive foods in our meals -- that is why one should learn to select it wisely and prepare it properly. Pastry in .Your Meals: Is planned for 4-H club members who have had some experience in food preparation. The term pastry in this project unit is limited to crusts for pies, tarts, and patty shells. There is also a section on meal planning and preparation in this project. Yeast Breads in Your Meals: An opportunity to learn the skills involved in making baked yeast products. This project is Welcome Ten Members To Newcomers Club Ten new residents of the McHenry area attended the March meeting of the Town and Country Newcomers club held March 8. They were, Lorraine Abbenseth, Sheila Aleckson, Diane Berling, Carole Guanci, Marsha Hallberg^ Peg Kaiser, 13, and all auxiliary members, Legionnaires and their guests are invited to attend. Instead of the usual pot-luck dinner, it will a be a buffet dinner at 5 p.m. Reservations must be made at the post home by the eleventh. Birthday greetings were extended to Vicky Bottari, Betty Lou Smith, Midge Scharf, Helen Birmingham and Adele Butler. Betty Lou Smith and Betty Lingenfelter were win­ ners of the Veteran s Craft prizes. Susanne Homo was not present to receive the at­ tendance award. Jane Grothman was refresh­ ment chairman with her committee of Catherine Ed- strom, Elaine Prange, Marilyn Phalin, Susan Schaefer, Marilyn Harrison, Dorothy Buchert, Dawn LaBuy, Dorothy Larson, Louise Draper, Henrietta Vycital, Pauline Zimmy, Estelle Stimmler, Betty Lingenfelter, Cynthia Wagner and Ceil Violett. After the business meeting Mr. Nepz of the Illinois Bell Telephone Company showed a slide presentation on places to visit in Illinois. A bake sale has been set up to be held Saturday, March 19 at the McHenry State Bank from 9 a.m. to noon. On March 21 a check for $100 will be presented to the City Council as a donation towards Petersen park. On Saturday, March 26 a couples' progressive dinner will be held with hors d' oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Patricia Craig, an Italian dinner for the main course at the home of Judy Franks and dessert at the home of Karen Purcell. On Saturday, April 2 at the city park an Easter egg hunt for the children of the members will be held. Also in April a couples' bowling night is being planned, as well as a fish fry in May. Next month's meeting will be held Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul's church. After the regular business meeting Detective Witman will give a talk on drug enforcement.
