For a corporate traveler (who probablv isn't paving anvwav) the rates might be prettv good, thanks to corporate discounts. In dividual travelers mav have to search a little more careful!v for the best buv. The car renters ARE making an effort to attract the ordinary traveler, with new discounts. The best deals are usuallv weekend or weeklv rates quoted "dr>That is. vou buv the gas. Also, the smaller the car. ihe smaller the rate, as a general rule. Some renters offer a car with unlimited mileage; others charge a certain amount per mile on top of a smaller base charge. 1 hich is better depends on vour plans; if there's a long trip involved, vou probablv want unlimited mileage. If vou aren't going far but want the convenience of a car. the mileage fee will pose no threat. Airport locations are ex pensive, and vou will probablv bear the extra cost as a renter; where possible, opt for a down town or other non-airport location. Small local com panies (even auto dealers, locallv} often offer the best deals, but vou have to know who vou're dealing with. Cheek with friends in the area or the Better Business Bureau if vou don't know the firm. The smaller firms mav not have exactlv the car vou want, either. ^ ou'll do better with a credit card - it stands as vour sign of stability Credit card renters do not have to leave a deposit, nor do thev have to wait for a credit check. If vou have a corporate identitv card, don't be sh> about asking for a corporate rate; the renters aren't too fussv about whether vou're REALLY going to do business on this trip. Check to make sure that vou're getting the lowest rate , available; this SHOl LD be automatic, but it isn't alwavs. And watch for special deals that mav be available through vour airline or as part of a travel package.
