SECTION 2 - PAGE 1 • PLAINPEALER-FRIDAV. MARCH 18,1977 AVAILABLE - a dog the size you like, the kind you like, males and females, complete with a full measure of affection and gratitude in every wag of the tail. Where? At the County Shelter, 11608 Banford road, Woodstock, phone 338-7040. This is one of the young dogs there now, hoping for a home. Their time is limited simply because space is limited. (Photoassistance courtesy of Photocom) Bv Estelle Atw611 A bill that really has teeth in it to ban the destructive steel jaw trap will soon be in troduced to the Illinois legislature. It is House Bill HB 1000 which amends the existing act and outlaws the use of the leghold steel jaw trap. It in cludes all sales, manufacture, and distribution of the leghold trap, and for violations, will impose a fine of $300. The steel jaw leghold trap is the barbaric device used to trap furbearing animals for their pelts. It maims, tortures, and kills, often very slowly and agonizingly, any creature that steps on it. Not only do these traps inflict severe injury and torture on animals, the fingers or toes of small children who come in contact with them, could be severed or mutilated. A case was reported of a two- year-old child, barefoot, who walked into a trap camouflaged with leaves and lost two of his toes. Besides those out for com mercial gain through the use of these traps, there are the cat haters and dog haters in our communities who feel no compunction about staking these traps in their yards, using the excuse they set them to catch rats or other rodents. Actually they are set out to destroy cats and dogs who unknowingly wander into their precincts. There certainly are more humane ways to deal with this particular problem. Why is it legitimate that trappers have the option to torture and kill wildlife with the use of these barbaric traps? Doesn't America's wildlife belong to all of us? Do we have to condone this senseless and cruel exploitation of furbearing animals, and the more than equivalent numbers of har mless non-target animal® (bb-frjmulf/mu) HINT OUR MUSE N VAC--dw i •inaction cwpit dwMi Mckiw d u t t f f . . . • ri-- carpt Wfcwi with I wstst iii ctomini toNrtion i • Immm md lift* til dirt griee eed reetitoes te tiw carpet mfact wtwra CLEjS.TKSH Md DOOR-FREE! ctuncMwm , |»« num . . * - . u in IM cuun IMUK . Do we have to allow this ugly practice to continue? There is something we can do. Write our state legislators urging passage of HB 1000 outlawing the use, manufac ture, sale and distribution of the steel jaw leghold trap. Write 33rd District Rep. Calvin L. Skinner, Jr., Rep. Bruce Waddell, and Rep. Thomas J. Hanahan, House of Representatives, 206 State Office Building, Springfield, Illinois, 62706; and Sen. Jack Schaffer, Senate Office* Building, Springfield, Illinois, 62706. While we cannot pinpoint the exact date when HB 1000 will be introduced, the likelihood is that it will be the end of March. Therefore, let ters should be sent im mediately. Helping Paws is an animal welfare association dedicated to striving for better treatment of animals.
