M mi M M ==K= Community Leaders Women's Role.. Someone once wrote that, "music is the universal DOROTHY WEBER (Story series and photo by Jeff Bonato) language, and love is the key." Tliat is certainly true of Mrs. Dorothy Weber, who, through her love of music, is able to communicate with persons of all ages and backgrounds. For the past thirty-two years (that's right, 32) she has played the organ on a regular basis at the McHenry Roller rink, playing a great variety of selections solely from memory. And, for the past FORTY-SIX years, MrS. Weber has played the organ at daily Mass at St. Patrick's church. A conservative estimate has Mrs. Weber playing at over 20,000 Masses at St. Patrick's, and the total grows daily. She can be seen each mor ning, walking from her home on the south side of McHenry, to the church, regardless of weather conditions. *4I love to walk," she said. "My father used to think it was crazy, but it keeps me young. When they had two morning Masses, I would play for them both, but now there is just the one at 7 a.m.," she added. Mrs. Weber finds that playing is a way for her to relax. "I relax as I play," she said. "For eighteen years, I played five nights a week at the roller rink, but now I just play of Friday and Saturday." She still recalls the ner vousness she felt the first time she played at the roller rink. "Kids are funny," she said. "If they don't like you, they'll walk off the floor. Fortunately, they didn't walk off the floor on me. "Still," she added, "it took me three days to stop worrying." Music is a family affair within the Weber household. And much of it started with the roller rink. "My daughters (twins Jean and Joan) used to play with me," she said. "One would be at the popcorn cart and the other would play, and then they would switch off. "They'd always rather skate though," she laughed. The twin daughters, along with a son, Bill, and her husband, Carl, spent many a Sunday singing together in church. Carl and Mrs. Weber even met through a musical group, and both daughters and the son are still very much involved with music. Mrs. Weber became the organ player at St. Patrick's from the time the church first acquired a pipe organ. "I was the piano player and knew music," she explained. "When we got the pipe organ, I took lessons in Chicago and began playing it here." Mrs. Weber also plays for weddings and funerals, and calls herself, "the last resort." When planted en masse, the incredible effect of buttery color accented by lush green leaves distinguishes 'Yellow Galore' for low background plantings or for use in formal landscaping and containers. » < Mature plants are characterized by masses of 4'/»-inch double flowers on stocky 14 to 18-ioch plants which bloom in only 70-80 days (60-70 days under long night conditions). Peak bloom occurs about 4 weeks after the first flower appears and lasts for over a month. Because of the self-cleaning nature of this vigorous hybrid, the plants are con stantly covered with a solid mass of fresh blooms. Unlike some varieties, 'Yellow Galore' will not "burn out" before the end of the season but will continue to grow and bloom vigorously until killed by frost. As a result of hybrid vigor, tight blooms, and dense foliage, 'Yellow Galore' resists certain disease-bearing insects. Late spring is the best time for planting hedge-type marigolds. Where summers are long and hot, a second planting can be made in midsummer for Fall color. 'Yellow Galore' will grow quickly and surely from seeds sown in the garden after frost danger is past. Seedlings can easily be moved to fill in holes, providing cue is taken to move a root ball of soil with each plant. Started plants will be available in most markets; purchase them before the plants have been stunted by staying in the flat or pack too long. Marigold 'Yellow Galore' excelled in competitive trials across the USA and Canada am^was judged best in its class. Seeds and plants will be available for your spring 1977 garden; look for them at your garden supply store or in mail order catalogs. BUDDYRUFF PAGE :{ - PLAIN DEALER-FRIDAY. The group is a second generation of the famous McNamara Dancers of Chicago, and is composed of children from Crystal Lake and Woodstock. The talented group meet weekly for practice and perform a variety of jigs, reels and hornpipes. On the bill with the dancers will be Dan Taylor, guitarist, and the Moran family, pipe and drum ensemble. The entire Irish gala will be hosted by Mai Bellairs, local radio per sonality. A combination of Irish mornings, Father Petit (from St. Patrick's) might say, 'oh, I forgot, there's a wedding this afternoon. Can you play?" Can she play? The thousands of persons from the community who have listened, and enjoyed her work for many years recognize Mrs. Weber as one of the premiere organists in the area. It is rare to find a person with Mrs. Weber's talent, not just for music, but for com municating with all people - young and old, rich and poor. Community leader, Dorothy Weber, is living proof that music is indeed the universal language, and love is certainly the key.
