This is Nurses Week and my memory goes back to times when a nurse was a Godsend to me ! That ias a shocker j Just read that some com mittee made a survey and came up with the conclusion that the reason more energy $as used this past winter was due to the extremely cold weather Amazing! * When one of our advertising geniuses. Bob,asked if I was neady for St. Patrick's Day, I had to tell him that I started getting ready March 18th last year. f Which reminds -- Gene Morenz asked "innocently" if St Patrick's Day would be on the 18th. \ Any Irishman will tell you tfiat the 18th is Recovery Day- recovery from too much corned beef and cabbage. What else? This is one of those in- between seasons in local sports. Soon will come baseball, soft- ball. track, golf and you name it. Now comes the Class AA basketball championship battle in Champaign. Will a favorite win it? Will a dark horse come through ? It will be fun to watch. A special card comes from Jerry, Louise and Family (the Millers) with this verse: May your St. Patrick's Day be keen With some "Wrigley's" Wrapped in green. Pasted below the verse were four sticks of "Wrigley's" Doublement gum. That made our day. It doubled my pleasure. SIGN ON A CAR: America Needs More Smiles Per Gallon. As in recent years, the Plaindealer is publishing the story to en courage Journalism students. By Chris Dixon It was fast break vs. slow, deliberate basketball in the Springfield Lanphier Kankakee Eastridge class AA supersectional game at Illinois State university in Normal Tuesday night. And it was the fast break, well-balanced Springfield team that literally ran away with the game. Springfield defeated Eastridge 64-47. In the first quarter, Kankakee kept pace with the Lanphier Lions, who played a tough 2-3 defensive zone. The Springfield strategy was to keep Kankakee from gaining a lead and then slowing down the pace of the game. "We knew if Kankakee got a two-point lead they'd try to hold onto the ball," said Springfield coach Robert Nika. "We wanted to play our kind of running game." In the early minutes of the first quarter both teams had a number of turnovers and forced many of their shots. It was apparent that both teams were tense. "We were real tight in the first quarter," said Springfield's Gordon Smith, who scored 12 points for the night. "When we started to in crease the lead, though, we began to settle down." The score at the end of the first quarter was 12 to 8 in favor of Lanphier. As Lanphier slowly increased its lead in the second quarter. Kankakee was forced to speed up their offense and play ac cording to Springfield's game plan. Shelly Tunson, Kevin Jones. Tim Hulett and Mike Watson all shared in a well balanced scoring attack. They are all returning starters from last year's Springfield squad. In the second half Kankakee tried to play catch-up ball by coming down and taking forced shots, but the Raiders could not narrow the lead by more than ten points. The 64 to 47 victory for Lanphier gives them a 26-4 record and moves them to the quarter-finals where the team will battle the winner at the Northwestern University Supersectional. Basketball Tournament The Purple Thumpers of S.E.D.O.M. climaxed their season by winning the Northern Illfnois Athletic Association Special Education basketball tournament March 7,8, and 9 at Lorado-Taft. The Thumpers revenged some early season defeats by Eldena and Rock- ford by upsetting both on their way to the championship. In the semi-finals, Eldena and S.E.D.O.M. traded baskets throughout the game until Ray Lustig and Paul Smith hit key fourth-quarter baskets to win the game for S.E.D.O.M. with a score of 20 to 18. In the championship match, defending champion Rockford had what appeared to be a comfortable 14 to 8 lead with only 3 minutes left, but S.E.D.O.M. fought back with clutch baskets by Lustig, Smith and Jim Chapman, to tie the game at 14 all with a minute left. The teams then each scored a basket, sending the game into overtime, with the score 16 all. Ray Lustig's basket won the game in overtime, 18 to 6 and brought the championship trophy home to S.E.D.O.M After a victory dance on Tuesday night at Lorado Taft, coach Quin Studer and the cheerleaders arrived home to a rousing pep rally at S.E.D.O.M ("enter.
