On The Sidelines by Dick Bobbin Well tomorrow night a new state champion will be crowned in Champaign, as defending champion Morgan Hark went by the wayside quite awhile ago in the Chicago Public League playoffs. As this is being written before the Super Sectional games begin, local interest will be on the Barrington Broncos of the North Suburban. Although there is no love lost between Barrington and other conference schools, most coaches wish the team from their conference the best of luck, and hope that they can go all the way, if nothing more than to prove that they had a representative conference the past season. A good possibility for the finals is a Chicago Public league representative, and a member of the Chicago Catholic League. Virgil Fletcher of Collinsville in his 36th and last season is the main hope of the downstate schools. As mentioned before Phillips of Chicago rates the favorite spot, but anything can happen at this stage of the game. Congratulations are in order to members of the McHenry High wrestling team, who took away honors the other night at the annual banquet. Don Freund the Most Valuable, Bob Larke who won the Pender Award, and to Ed Mullen and Mark Ziszik who were the Most Improved. The Warrior basketball statistics showed that they were outshot 48 to 43 percent. They however outshot their opponents from the field 1,399 to 1,276. A matter of 61 pts. separated them from a winning season, and this is the first losing season for Coach Ludwig since he got his program on the right track. Two losing seasons, and then seven successful, until this past season. Some sour grapes on the part of the veteran coach Dolph Stanley of Boylan of Rockford. Mentioned that Barrington and other teams in the North Suburban didn't quite play first class basketball. I think Mr. Stanley should check his records. Four years ago Crystal Lake won the Rockford Sectional, last year our Warriors went on to DeKalb, and this year Barrington was the sectional winner. Three of the past four winners of the Rockford Sectional were members of the North Suburban. Not a bad record for teams who don't play first class basketball. The Ouija Board man Dave Mihevc brought to my attention that only two mistakes were made this season. The Warriors did not finish second as he picked, and Libertyville placed second, instead of a tie for third with North Chicago. I Our apologies to the Ouija Board, only two mistakes that involve 144 games, has to be some kind of a record. In checking for a game to go down memory lane this week, ran across a most interesting box score. It involves one of McHenry High School's most popular coaches. Golf coach Chuck Cuda was a member of the Morton High School of Cicero's State Champions in 1942. Although the popular coach did not score in the final game, he did score 5 important points in the semi-final win over Centralia. In the earlier rounds Chuck had 12 against Cathedral of Springfield, and in the opening game had a game high of 16 against Decatur. We wonder after the Decatur game if he was nicknamed "Gunner". Sixteen points in those days were enough at various times to outscore your opponents. Ferns rank high among the world's perfect houseplants. Their graceful beauty comple ments any decor--traditional or contemporary. Possibly be cause they can survive shade and tend to be insect- and dis ease-free, they frequently out live other plants. The Boston fern and its re lative Fluffy Ruffles can be hung at a window instead of drapes, while upright ferns like the maidenhair make good table accents. Position ferns so their sym metry, which is part of their beauty, can be admired from all sides. Fern fronds are deli cate and may bruise if they touch another object, even other plants, so give them plenty of room. A quarter turn every month or so will encour age even growth. The right size pot is essen tial for a full, healthy-looking fern. Look at the root growth, not fronds, when choosing the proper size. A newly-potted fern should have an inch or less extra space all around the roots. Repot a fern when the soil becomes a "root ball" well filled with roots. At this point, go to a slightly larger pot. Plastic planters, like those from Rubbermaid, help retain soil moisture so important to ferns. The carved clay design comes in a variety of attrac tive colors that can be used free standing or as a hanging planter. The drainage holes in the bottom and matching re movable saucer allow essential drainage and prevent overwa- tering. Ideally, ferns' soil should be moist, but not soaking wet. Never allow it to go completely dry. Once the roots become dry and the fronds start drooping, most ferns cannot be revived. A thorough watering once a week is recommended. To wa ter a fern, lift its fronds and pour water directly onto the soil. Once a month leach out harmful salts by soaking ferns for several hours in a tub of water. Ferns love humidity, so mist them daily. Grouping several together will increase humid ity and help them thrive. Bathrooms are a natural place for ferns -- the moisture and indirect light will keep most ferns happy. In general, ferns appreciate warmth and relish fresh air, but not drafts. Most are hap piest with temperatures of 70 to 75° F. during the day and 55 to 60° F. at night. Light is important, but bright sunlight is often too harsh; try an east or west window. Most ferns can sur vive under incandescent light, but they need 12 to 16 hours daily. Ferns need a porous soil or a fibrous growing medium.
