" 57 Knowing what to do when a tornado approaches may save a life, says O.L. Hogsett, University of Illinois Extension safety specialist. Illinois leads the nation in the total number of deaths resulting from tornadoes and ranks second in the total amount of dollar damage to property. Because more than 65 per cent of Illinois' tornadoes occur between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., there is not one simple safety rule to follow, says Hogsett. Family members may be anywhere, at school, shopping, work or at home. The safest place to be during a tornado warning is inside an underground shelter with the radio tuned to a local station for weather bulletins. If one can't get to an undrground shelter, Hogsett suggests: --Immediately open several north and east windows to help equalize the pressure between the partial vacuum of the tornado and the inside of the building. -After opening them, stay away from all windows. -Shut off electricity and gas if this can be done quickly and simply. -Avoid rooms with large edge-supported roofs, such as gymnasiums and auditoriums. Stay in an interior hallway on a lower floor. , -At home, move to the center of the basement or lower floor and stay away from outside walls. -Get under a heavy piece of furniture such as a table or workbench. -Get out of mobile homes, because they easily tip over in tornadoes. Seek other shelter if possible. -If no buildings are available, move to right angles away from the tornado's oath. If there is no time to escape, lie flat or face down in the nearest ditch or ravine. To good home. How long should you keep farm records to meet Internal Revenue service demands? Different records need to be kept different lengths of time, says George J. Young McHenry county Extension adviser. Records and information about the purchase of farm land should be kept as long as you own the farm-and even longer if the land stays in the family. If the land stays in the family, pass all the records along as the next generation takes over the farm. Records pertaining to con struction costs of new buildings, grain storage, livestock feeding facilities, or other specialized facilites should also be kept per manently, says Young. Major remodeling jobs where the amount spent is added to the value of a capital asset and then depreciated should also be kept as long as you own the asset. Usually your depreciation schedule contains m o s t o f t h i s v a l u a b l e i n formation, so it should be kept permanently. Records of ordinary farm income, such as sales of grain or livestock and of ordinary farm expenses should be kept for at least ten years, recom mends Young. Copies of income tax returns and estate tax reports should: be kept in definitely. Ordinarily an assessment by IRS, which would follow an audit of your income tax return, must be made within three years after the filing date But in certain cases, assessments for income tax due may be made up to six years after the filing. And in some s p e c i a l c i r c u m s t a n c e s , verification may require ten years of records. There are certain exceptions to the above rules In the cas<- of fraud, taxpayer's intent to evade tax or taxpayer's failure to file, an Internal Revenue Service audit and assessment for additional income tax may be made at any time. In addition to keeping your record book for income tax purposes, also keep cancelled checks, receipts, and all other evidence to support the various entries in the record book. The same goes for farm record print-outs from electronic data- processing equipment (EDP). In addition to keeping the print out sheets (information which comes from the machine), also keep receipts and other vouchers which substantiate entries on the EDP sheets. To have income and expense receipts in an orderly form at the end of the year, sort all receipts by company or firm which issued the receipt. Then put them all together and store in a large envelope, box, or whatever size container is needed. These should then be stored in a filing cabinet or some reasonably safe plac£. (This is a good reason for having a farm office or a special place in the farm home for an office area.)
