1 SKt HON M»A(iK I - IM. \ l \ I)KALE R-WKDXKSDAY. MARCH 23. 1977 Keepin' Healthy One of the oldest diseases known to the human race .a disease that has been around •for thousands of years 'continues to plague even today in this last quarter of the 2oth Century. The disease is gonorrhea, which infects thousands of Ulinoisans each year Most of i ts vict ims are young, and many of them are infected because of their ignorance about the disease, i ts mode of t ransmission and preventive measures What 's even more tragic is that many young people who become infected with gonorrhea fai l to seek treat ment Sometimes this fai lure is due to fear of having their parents learn about their in fection sometimes they are too ashamed to see a physician often i t 's s imply because they do not know enough about the disease to recognize i ts symptoms Now we are faced with a new strain of gonorrhea that does not respond to treatment with penici l l in I t has a very long cl inical name pencil l inase- p r o d u c i n g N e i s s e r i a gonorrhoeae but is referred to simply as PPNG. Although i t does not seem to be present in the state at this t ime, public health officials , , fear i t is only a matter of t ime unti l i t is identif ied in I l l inois. According to the I l l inois Department of Public Health, the detection of PPNG is complicated by the fact that i ts symptoms are the same as those of the more familiar strain of gonorrhea In most men. these symptoms will appear within a few days following infection. Most women, however, wil l not experience any symptoms unti l the disease has progressed and complications develop In order to lessen the potential for the spread of PPNG in I l l inois, the state health department is urging anyone who is t reated for gonorrhea to return for a "test of cure " and to do so within f ive to 14 days after receiving treatment If the "test of cure" is posit ive, or if the patient 's symptoms have not disap peared. further test ing is necessary to determine whether that patient may be" infected with PPNG. If the lab tests confirm PPNG. the patient wil l receive an an tibiotic which is effective in the treatment of PPNG. The state health department also says i t 's important that anyone who may be infected with gonorrhea seek immediate medical at tention. Any strain of untreated gonorrhea can result in s teri l i ty, arthri t is , bl indness, heart disease or other serious complications. In I l l inois, there are many VI) t reatment centers where patients can receive proper treatment The state health department maintains a toll- f r e e t e l e p h o n e . . . V D checkline where callers can get information about VD. and the location of the nearest VD treatment center So. if you want in formation about venereal disease ' including PPNG). or if you want to know where to go lor diagnosis and treat ment call 1-800-252-8989. any weekday between 8:30 a m and (Hl p .m. The number is tol l- t ree from any telephone in I l l inois You can also obtain VD information by contacting your local health department, or writ ing to I l l inois Department of Public Health. Jt PERSON Teacher Of The Jf eek (UlsirLii l~*i McHENRY 3750 W. ELM ST. ROXANNE THOMAS Miss Roxanne Thomas is a second grade teacher and team leader at Edgebrook school. Miss Thomas enjoys skiing, reading, music, crafts and traveling. She has traveled to Hawaii, Europe and the East Coast during the Bicentennial celebration. Her studetns are involved in a mini-course concerned with drarna. They will make scripts for plays and work out pan- tomines. Metrics is being emphasized in their math work while heat, light and energy is being discussed and studied in Science. The students became so enthused with the Science unit that they extended it to cover the Solar system The students became in terested in St. Patrick's day with various creative writing units on Leprechauns. They also created some "Good Luck" shamrocks for other students in the building. Strengthening sentence structure and alphabetizing are some of the areas they are concerned with in their Language Arts area. They are re-enforced by various in dependent games. The students are also able to use the "quiet area" that is carpeted and located in their room. Miss Thomas graduated from SIU and is involved in a Master's program at the University of Illinois. She has also taken advanced studies from National and LaVerne college. Her hometown is Palatine. Presently she lives in Wauconda Nu-Voice Club Plans Meeting There are people in the community for whom the normal life saving mouth-to- mouth resuscitation techniques would not be effective These individuals are "laryngec tomees", those who have had the larynx or voice box removed due to cancer or trauma. They do not breathe through the nose and mouth following their surgery; instead they breathe through a special opening in the neck called a stoma. This relocation of air support calls for an entirely different life saving technique. This technique and other life saving procedures and services will be discussed at the next meeting of the Nu-Voice club of McHenry county. This county group of laryngectomees meet on a monthly basis at the Easter Seal Therapy center, 708 Washington street, Woodstock. This month's meeting will be held at this facility Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker for the evening will be Jim Roth, representing the Woodstock Rescue squad. Any interested individuals are invited to attend. For further information, please contact Cheryl Van Zandt, speech clinician at 338-1707.
