'199 Response was quick to a column which ran in January when Sally Justin, a wildlife rehabilitator in McHenry county found her food supplies # for her charges running low. Needed were nuts, acorns, etc. Many of our kindhearted readers carried to her door their left-over holiday nuts and other suitable edibles. One anonymous donor left a 25 pound bag of sunflower seeds and since no name ac companied the gift, Justin hoped we could acknowledge the giver in the column. One lady brought acorns and told her that when the snow was off the ground she would bring more and serve as her "acorn lady". Some small children came with offerings of mixed nuts for her animals. A nice supply of walnuts came from another source. The address is 404 Haffel road, Woodstock, if there are any more of those left-overs. And Justin an nounced that a special fund has been set up for those who wish to send a contribution. It's the Wildlife Rehabilitation fund, McHenry County Conservation department, 142 Washington street, Woodstock 60098. All kinds of animals receive Justin's ministrations. She is teaching an orphaned baby opossum all that a baby opossum needs to know and would ordinarily learn from its mother. A tiny tree sparrow was brought to her with an injured wing. She fixed it as good as new and then released the bird. It flew to the top branch of a nearby tree and sang at the top of its lungs -- its way of saying thank you. And speaking of birds, one lady called in to offer a helpful tip to others now that the bird nesting season is approaching. Cleaning her dryer exhaust pipe recently she found a dust- covered dead bird inside. She said they go in places like this at nesting time or when the weather turns cold. Her suggestion: use a piece of hardware cloth fastened firmly over the outlet of the pipe to prevent the bird from getting in. And again, readers responded when requests were made recently for volunteers with special skills adaptable to the work of Helping Paws, and for those who have an interest in animal welfare work. We invite all those who volunteered at the time and any others who are interested to attend an informal open house get- together to be held Thursday, April 14, from 7 to 10 p.m., in Room 249 of the new McHenry County college building. A hostess will greet you at the door. Purpose of the open house is to get acquainted with Helping Paws and with all of its programs. We'll be glad to see you on that evening. Helping Paws maintains an office, open Monday through Saturday from 10 to noon and from 1 to 3; phone 459-2641.
