Nothing to do in a small town? Well, we checked our weekly calendar and peeked at next Sunday. Here's what we found. At 8 o'clock in the morning, they will start serving a break fast in the Johnsburg Com munity Club That's the one we told you about a week or so ago "Bj-eakfast With Ernie". Yep. Ernie Banks (Mr Cub. not the Peoria Central basketball player) will be there. A big crowd is sure to show up. At 1 p m the same day. Boy Scout Troop No. 162 will serve a 'Chili Dinner" with all the trimmings at the American Legion dining hall. That deserves support. Now comes Shirley Smith to tell us about how "tastefully and lovingly the Opera House (Woodstock i has been restored'. Shirley is in the cast of "South Pacific" with what we are told is a great company. Sounds good. Let's not forget that Sunday- is also the final day of the big basketball tournament spon sored by local Foresters. This is a state tournament that brings teams from distant parts. The men at the top must like the way McHenry handles these tournaments. They have been coming back year after year. So. If you don't have anything tp do next Sunday, think over the list. You can be busv. PEOPLE WE MEET ALONG THE TRAIL - Ray Pries tells us to "stick with the Cubs" -- Told him we always do --- Says Ray, "You and Blondie are alike" -- John Bolton came back from Florida --- Think he saw the white stuff on the ground and went back- Bill Molnaire says he will be ready to sifte again next Memorial Day - Like old man river. Bill keeps rolling along. Hardly know how to figure the coming baseball season. For teams who had the cash to buy players, we can say it again, the rich get richer. If Owner Phil Wrigley had the stars today that he had in the days of Gabby Hartnett, Charlie Grimm, Roger Horn- sbv, Riggs "Old Hoss" Stephenson. Hack Wilson. Kiki Cyler, Charlie Root, Pat Malone -- you name the rest -- he would have to sell his gum business, plantations, and Lake Geneva cottage to pay the salaries. The Yankees would have to turn over the franchise to Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig with nothing left for the rest of those great stars. Baseball teams, like other sports groups, will have to be owned by multi-millionaires who are willing to toss some petty cash into the hopper to pay the bills. With expansion there is bound to be some glaring weaknesses on teams. Fans will probably flock to see the winners. But heaven help the losers at the gate. MCHS Mr. Basketball Award To Brian Miller Bv Dick Rabbitt Brian Miller senior forward on Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry High Warrior basket ball team at the annual banquet on Monday night at West Campus. He led the team in scoring with a 20 pt. average and 490 pts. for the season. Brain was All Conference and All Elgin area, along with Special Mention in the Chicago Daily News and Honorable Mention in the Tribune. Billy Hurckes won the free throw award, and was also an All Conference choice, along with Honorable Mention in the Daily News. Elgin Courier, and Tribune. The dinner was well at tended, and Coach Ludwig had nothing but praise for his- squad. He made brief remarks about all the members of his squad, and rounded out the evening with an introduction of his wonderful wife by saying "This is the first time in eight years, that I did not have to contend with this mother". Sophomore and Freshmen coaches Gary Collins and Gary Gray introduced their squads and likewise made some comments about the boys. List of the squads: V ARSITY BASKETBALL AWARDS 1976-77 Certificate.
