by Dick Rabbltt On The Sidelines For the first time in nine years the basketball championship of Illinois is not in the Chicago area. Peoria Central won the title for the second time, winning the first championship in history way back in 1908. It is probably the best thing that could happen to Illinois basketball. The Chicago area dominated the tourney, and it was quite evident Friday afternoon, when the smallest crowd in history of the Assembly Hall watched Phillips and St. Laurence play in the opening game. With the championship leaving the Chicago area, it is expected more interest will arise throughout the state. Central and southern teams in the state, were a little put out by the dominance of the bigger schools from the North. A lot of underclassmen showed their stuff at the state finals. Of the eight teams in the final at Champaign, only 22 seniors started for their teams. That left 18 underclassmen in starting roles, a thing unheard of in past tourneys. There is already a predication that next years tourney will be the best in the long history of state tournaments. Some more bouquets are in order. Pat Stoffel and Mary Koleno senior girls who made the All Conference team for the lady Warriors. These two gals know what the game is all about, and do a fine job. Brian Miller on his selection as Mr. Basketball, and Billy Hurckes for his free throw award. A remainder that the J.C. wrestling tourney for boys in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be held tonight at West Campus beginning at 6:30 p.m. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded to the first four places in each weight event. Sounds like a lot of fun, and hope that you will attend. Sportswriters from several McHenry County newspapers met Wednesday at West Campus, to select the County All Star team in both Class AA and Class A divisions. A banquet will be held in the very near future to honor these boys, and the list will be published next week, along with the details of the banquet. Last years banquet was a huge success, and this one promises to top it. Going down memory lane for the final time this season, thought we would take you back a quarter of a century to the year 1952. This is the year that little Hebron won the hearts of not only the people in Illinois, but throughout the nation. The school of 97 students shocked the sports world, when they defeated Quincy in the only overtime game in a championship, 64 to 59. Many of you saw the five starters on T.V. last week at Champaign, where the team was honored. It was too bad that their fine coach Russ Ahern could not have been with the squad. Russ died in late November, and for those of you who knew Russ, he would have relived every minute of that season.
