PAGE IS - PLAIN DEALER-WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30. 1977 by JOSEPH COOLS s t a f f p s y c h o l o g i s t news from the Femilv Service and Mentil Heelth Clinic of McHenry County Driving Permits Have Stringent Regulations ("Editor's note: This is the twentieth in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health center staff. This article is "Coping-Changing Role of Women") Eric Hoffer. longshoreman turned philosopher, once postulated that a situation becomes intolerable only when there is a possibility of change. This axiom certainly has been dramatically evident in the black population.. Once legislation opened the possibility of jobs and education, the normally quiet and beaten black population became suddenly intolerant of any form of discrimination. Women in our society have recently undergone a strikingly similar change. Not many years ago. the majority of women were expected to and were content with getting married, having children, and keeping house. Behind every great man was a supportive wife - "behind", of course was the place the woman was ex pected to be. a secondary person in a world run by men. * Women were of course, ac cepted in the work world, but as secretaries, not bosses; nurses, not doctors; stewardesses, not pilots; or models, not photographers. Now at least, the "possibility" of change has occurred. Ironically, it the same legislation that gave blacks the possibility of equal opportunities that have given women the "right" to use their minds and skills on an equal basis with all persons. The women's liberation movement, often joked about, . and at times unpleasantly militant was as inevitabje as the black civil rights movements. Eventual equality for women appears to be as inevitable as equal opportunity for blacks. There are. however, some rather unpleasant con sequences along the road to equal opportunity: guilt (do I have the right to be a different person from what I am ex pected to be*, insecurity (can I really perform as well as I think I can), and resentment (how many years have I wasted because I wasn't given a chance to show what I can do). Are teenagers in compliance with the law pertaining to permits? According to the Illinois Vehicle code an in struction permit entitles the holder of that permit, while having the permit in his im mediate possession, to drive a motor vehicle, excluding a motor driven cycle or motor cycle, upon the highways of the state for a period of one year after issuance. But. this is allowed only when the permit holder is ac companied by a licensed driver who has had a valid drivers license for at least one year, and has had at least one year's driving experience. Also, this licensed driver must be oc cupying the seat beside the driver. A twelve month instruction permit for the motor driven cycle (less than 150 cubic c e n t i m e t e r p i s t o n displacement) may be obtained by a person sixteen years of age or older, and entitles the holder to operate a motor driven cycle during daylight hours only, and under the direct supervision of a licensed motor driven cycle or motorcycle operator. A twelve month instruction permit for a motorcycle (more than 150 cubic centimeter Next: Consequences of the changing role of women. piston displacement) may be obtained by a person eighteen years of age or older and en titles the holder to operate a motorcycle upon the highways during daylight hours only and under the direct supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator An instruction permit when issued to a minor enrolled in a drivers education program , is restricted to the operation of a motor vehicle by the minor only when accompanied by an adult instructor of the driver education program during the minor's enrollment therein, or when practicing with a parent, or legal guardian who has a valid drivers license and at least one year of driving ex perience and who is occupying a seat beside the driver. After successful completion of the drivers education program and before qualifying for a drivers license, the minor is then restricted to the operation of a motor vehicle only when accompanied by a person who has a valid drivers license and at least one year of driving experience and who is occupying a seat beside the driver. • * • • The proper method of reforming the world is by reforming yourself, not your neighbors. Area Business Given Charter Secretary of State Alan Dixon announced recently the issuance of a charter to an area business. A "Not For Profit Cor- pqration" charter was issued to Howell's Villas-Nomis Estates Homeowners' association, 2505 N. Villa lane, McHenry. A "Statement Of Intent To Dissolve" was listed for Lake Inn incorporated, McHenry. Use Directions For Applying Pesticides Failure to follow label in structions on pesticide con tainers may reduce control of weeds, insects and crop diseases. And, by not reading label instructions, one can miss important safety suggestions. So, the time spent in reading the label may be the most important part of pest control* says George Young, University of Illinois Extension adviser. Before each pesticide ap pears on the market, it is registered with the En vironmental Protection agency (EPA). Along with a registration « application manufacturers also submit data showing that the product, when used as directed, will be effective against pests listed on the label and will not cause unreasonable, adverse affects to man or the environment. This information is used to write precise directions for use and label statements that warn users of potential hazards. In addition to the trade name and manufacturer's name and address, every pesticide label VU )\'l(.( K> IHVL} N »J SUPER SALE III Model 37118 ®23-*25 off Weber ® covered barbecues Indirect cooking seals juices, flavor into roasts, fowl. "eg. 2.97 includes signal words to in dicate potential danger of the pesticides. "Danger-Poison" and a skull and crossbones are found on highly toxic products, explains Young. "Warning" appears on moderately toxic pesticides and "Caution" is used for pesticides with a low or slight toxicity. Labels include precautionary statements explaining hazards to the applicator and en vironment They also give first- aid instructions in case of accidental poisoning. The directions for use list pests the product will control, methods of application, frequency of application, and instructions for proper storage and disposal of the pesticide and its container. After October 21, 1977, every label will classify the pesticide as either a restricted-use or general-use pesticide. Restricted-use pesticides may only be bought by a certified applicator and applied under the direction of a certified applicator. General-use pesticides may be bought and applied by the public in ac cordance with label directions. In classifying a pesticide as either general-use or restric ted-use. the EPA considers the toxicity of the pesticide, the way in which the pesticide will be used and the effect of the pesticide on the environment, explains Young. The pesticide label contains all the necessary information for the correct and safe use of any pesticide. If the label is read and understood, the likelihood of misusing or having an accident with the presticide is reduced. Re*. 139.99 Model 37185 Wants 3V2-hp steel deck rotary/inower. THE SEARCH FOR MY FATHER As far as my eyes can see there is nothing but land... stretched out - reaching from sea to sea... I travel here to look for my father he was in this strange land, unwelcome, as a soldier - not as a friend. He was a German soldier ordered to fight in Russia. He carried the German uniform and he was forced to travel so far. He fought against the people who live and work in this land - it is their home - their right to fight and kill the enemy to stop them... even with their own bare hand. O, yes, he saw the children die - the women cry - , - the men, fighting against his army they all fought under one slogan to keep their country, their home, free. After many battles and dead soldiers lying everywhere... they began to fall back and became now, Russian prisoners... So, today, many years later in a new and different time. I came here to search for my father because someone long ago, had said: "He was seen alive, but was not dead"... It's been too long, since I saw him back home, in Germany, when I was just a little girl and we all were still...a family. The war took my mother away from me and I had to spend many years alone, in an orphan home. I waited and waited, until that special day...when I was grown up and I could learn to live by myself - alone... So, one day, I made up my mind to search for my father... and now I am here in this big, wide land but I am still alone and walk with empty hands... The snow is now falling from the grey winter sky. My eyes are often blinded unable to see... who is passing by... -- Suddenly, not far away from me there is a small village or little town, as I drive in... people begin to stare at me. "Strangers are very seldom here to be found".... an old white-haired woman begins to say... before she walks slowly away. !-i i..;.n£ivim I follow her, along this street to the end and suddenly, there is a cemetery in silence she is holding now, my hand... ...and I am alone again as I walk among the graves with strange sounding names. Everything is just like home I think in my heart... death is everywhere on earth, the same... There, I can see a grave away from the path surrounded by bush and a few trees on a wooden plate, I see a name - a German name -1 fall down on my knees and now I begin to pray... After moments of silence - my eyes begin to read... ' "A German soldier - once an enemy is buried here, his mind and body, is now free... and no longer can he cause any fear he may rest in our land - for he is no longer our enemy..." Just once more I turn around before I walk away... my mind is now at peace "I have found my father", after searching for so many years so far away, buried in Russian soil he too has found - peace Marie ---- • r THE CORNER STORE 4916 W.
