Keepin' Healthy With the coming of spring, children begin to anticipate Easter goodies...their parents begin planning for the traditional new dresses, suits, shoes and Easter bonnets...and the shelves in the stores blossom with Easter baskets, candy, lily plants and egg- dying kits. In many families, pictures of the children in their Easter finery will be taken and stored in a photo album for future reminiscence. And, one of the sweetest pictures is that of a child with a fluffy baby chick or soft rabbit. Each year, many parents or grandparents give these baby animals to small children. The Illinois Department of Public Health, however, cautions against mixing children with baby chicks, ducks or rabbits/State health experts warn that it is not good for the health of either the child or the animal. Most small children do not know how to handle the animals properly, and often injure or kill them accidentally. Children quite naturally like to squeeze and cuddle these soft, fluffy animals, and are too young to distinguish between the han dling of a toy and a real animal. They do not understand that live animals should not be carried around by the legs, wings or ears, or tossed nd thrown around like stuffed animals. As a result, the mortality rate of baby chicks, ducks and rabbits is extremely high. What may be even more important, however, is the fact that these animals can be sources of disease. Salmonellosis is probably the most common diseases associated with these domestic pets. It can be transmitted through the droppings of chicks, ducks or rabbits, especially when very young children are involved. It is not at all uncommon for a small child to touch the animal droppings, then put his fingers in his mouth, or handle food which he then eats. Another problem, of course, is that rabbits can...and do...bite. Although rabies usually does not occur in domestic rabbits, the razor- sharp teeth of even a small rabbit can inflict severe bites. This is especially true if the animal is frightened or hurt througlAltlshandling. One other consideration that many people overlook...es pecially city dwellers ....is that, if the baby an imals survive, you will need a suitable place to keep an adult chicken, duck or rabbit. If you want further in formation about household pets and disease, contact your local health department, or write to Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Disease Control, 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, 111., 62761.
