ELM ST., McHENRY, ILL. District 15 Perspectives How Can Parents Help Their Children? "Train up a child in a way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." This Biblical verse is so simple, yet so very true. We parents ought to ask ourselves: "Am I helping my children become mentally and spiritually sound, capable, and honest citizens? Are the things I say and do shaping my children to become a delinquent or a person to be admired for his or her spiritual, « emotional, or academic qualities?" Educating children is no little thing to be taken lightly. It requires parental concern, time, and effort. The following four questions should be asked by parents. They may at first appear to be so obvious that they do not deserve answers. Perhaps it is because they're obvious that they have gone unasked and unanswered for too long in America. Does My Child Know I Love Him? Children not only want but need love. They need to be assured daily, not merely with words, but with unquestionable expressions exhibited by their parents. Adults often overlook the significance of putting an arm around a child and squeezing him as they say: "Daddy (Mommy) sure loves you." Such action is not going to make a sissy out of a youngster-but it will let his iittle heart know that somebody cares. The same parental love that is poured out to a newborn baby should be expressed to that child throughout his lifetime. Adults who do not believe this type of parental expression is important to children ought to recall the "broken heart" they experienced when mom or dad,, pushed them aside or refused to let them crawl up on their lap for a big hug. Children who are not assured of parental love in younger years will not feel comfortable with their parents later ih life when there is need for a frank discussion about growing up. Do I Give My Children Personal Attention t / Each Day? One sure way to warm a youngster's heart and to send him off to school with a good attitude is to assure him that mom and dad care about him and the things he does in school. Some children seldom ex perience an opportunity to sit down with a parent and just talk about school, or read a story, or have a story read to them. What a little thing it is for a parent to snuggle close to a seven year old and read an excitement-packed adventure story. Two indirect messages come through to a child whose parents read to him: (1) "My Daddy (or Mommy) loves me," and (2) "Books and story climes are fun." A few moments each day spent in this type of parent- child reading or story time will cultivate within a child an unquenchable* thirst for knowledge through books and listening. NEXT WEEK: A continuation of "How Can Parents Help Their Children?" WORKWISE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 1. I lost my job four months ago and since then, I've been collecting unemployment in surance. I have tried, without success, to find a new job. Since I now have so much spare time, I would like to go back to school. Would my eligibility for unemployment insurance be affected if 1 were to attend school? If you decide to go to school, it may effect your eligibility for unemployment insurance. You will not be eligible for benefits if the time you spend at school interferes with the hours in which your type of work is generally performed. 2. A few days ago, 1 quit my job because I found a better paying position with a different company. On my last day of work, I went into the boss's office to get my final pay. He said he didn't have it yet. Isn't there some kind of law saying that companies must pay employees their final ched^s on their last day of work? No, there is not. According to the Wage Payment and Collection Act, an employee's final paycheck must be paid by the next regular payday. However, if your employer refuses to pay you on your next regularly scheduled payday, the Wage Claims Division of the Illinois Department of Labor may be able to help.
