In between his operatic career and his present job, Rosado has had a number of careers, all of them suc cessful. Before starting to work, Rosado was in the Marine Corps. In 1924 he entered an athletic contest, compet ing against servicemen from all branches of the military. The winner? Ernest Rosado. With his tour of Marine duty over, Rosado went to work for International Har- GET PROFESSIONAL carpet cleaning results! "I stayed in Havana until 1929," Rosado said. "When I came back I was in the same situation that a lot of people faced in the Depress sion--I was out of a job." Unemployment was a blessing of sorts for Rosado: He obtained a scholarship to the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago and studied voice and music theory. From the conservatory, Rosado went on to a singing career, working for Bala- ban-Katz, a company that owned a number of theatres in the Chicago area. His as sociation with Balaban-Katz lasted until 1937, when radio became a big part of people's lives and theatre at tendance dropped. Instead of going out, people were staying at home and listen ing to their favorite pro grams. "I could have gotten work in radio, but in those days they wanted you to work tor nothing," Rosado told a writer from The National Council on the Aging. The uncertainty of his future as a performer, coupled with Rosado's de sire to get married, influ enced his decision to "go back into business," as he put it. After a stint in New York with the bakery department of a large food concern, Ro sado switched companies and returned to the Chicago area. Presented by the Woman's auxiliary to McHenry hospital as a fund-raising project, the Country Art Fair is an exhibition of fine original art and an established showcase for McHenry county artists. Revenue raised from the fair is used to buy equipment for the local hospital. The three-day fair offers a judged show which displays three pieces from each par ticipating artist, awards prizes, and is an excellent "gallery" for the artist's work. The popular One-Man show this year features Sally Miller, well- known McHenry artist, and an active participant on the Art Fair committee. A gym show of large variety also will be presented where each artist is responsible for his own exhibit. Categories, or entries, include sculpture, painting, graphics, and photography. Crafts are not acceptable. "When the new job oppor tunity came up, I grabbed it." As so often happens in corporate life, Rosado was promoted to a position that required moving back to New York. My wife's father was dy ing of cancer at that time," Rosado said. "I told my boss there was no way I was leaving Chicago." Rather than return to New York, Rosado quit his job and ran his father-int law's farm from 1960 until 1964, when he wejitto Work at the photo mountirtffinfo* pany. "Some people mfgnt think that going from ail executive position to a mai chine operator is an impost sible transition," Rosadc/ said. "But you know some thing? I enjoy my job. I like the work and I like the peo- pie I work with." After all these years Ro sado still gives his voice a workout, singing in church every Sunday accompanied by his wife Emelie, the church organist. "I'm happy with the way my life has gone," Rosado said. "When I hear about an executive friend dying a year after retirement, I tell myself I'll be on the job for a long time. I think it keeps me young." * * * • \ OPERATION BROTH ERHOOD, a Chicago orga; nization providing service^ to the elderly, has inaugu* rated a mobile grocery store, which travels to vari ous neighborhoods on a set' schedule.
