4 Valentine is a pretty kitty (dark bluish gray thick fur), and a lucky one. A dog had mauled her injuring her leg. She was rescued and later turned over to Helping Paws. By that time her leg had healed leaving it shorter than the rest so she limps a little. The vet vetoed surgery since it was giving her no trouble. Spayed, probably under a year, she is a calm happy cat, plays all by herself, and gets along well with the dog (no grudge there). Call 639-2881 after 4 to adopt her. Box 205 • Cryilil Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815)459-2641 If you love your cat an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Do you realize what some of the hazards are if you allow your cat to roam freely? The odds are heavily stacked against the cat's return home, its safety, and its health. Some of the potential threats -- automobiles, dogs, predators, traps, poisons, getting lost, severe weather conditions, cat haters, cat tormentors, cat- nappers who sell them to laboratories -- all the stuff of which nightmares are made if your pet does not return home after its usual outing. Then again, it may return home but have picked up some unwanted problems that can be worrisome and often dangerous -- fleas, ficks, worms, in fections, wounds from a cat fight or an attack by other animals, injuries from an accident. A cat owner who always let her cat roam was upset when Si cat did not return one night, ys ai^weeks went by and no r„ Shf searched everywhere, ads, but never tecovered her cat. One suspicion she had, which may have been the case, v was that a neighbor who hated cats, disposed of it in some way. But she never knew what happened and the uncertainty tortured her. A foolhardy cat owner who lived on a very busy thorough fare with cars going by at all hours, was in the habit of let ting her cat out. It was just a matter of time before the cat was killed one dark night - struck by a motorist who probably never saw it. The owner was grief-stricken but it was she who placed her cat in jeopardey. Even cats accustomed to . roving get lost. If it's a house pet it is used to a warm house and a bed and food. Now it must forage for food and shelter often attaching itself to a strange house meowing plaintively in hunger. It is at the mercy of strangers who may or may not have com passion for its plight. It's possible they will have the cat picked up and destroyed. Another side-effect of cats roaming - indiscriminate breeding and litters of un wanted kittens. Even a cat that is well fed will hunt for mice and othef small animals such as rabbits, chipmunks and squirrels. These may be rabid tran sferring rabies to your cat unless it has been inoculated against rabies. Or they may carry tapeworms and other internal parasites which are transferred to the cat if it ingests the animal. Roaming freely the cat can become in fected with fleas, ticks, and mites, sometimes leading to skin problems and serious infections. If you must let your cat roam, do tag it for protection. But, better yet, have it spayed or neutered and train it to be an indoor cat. The cat may live out its nine lives this way. The dog rescued from the steel jaw trap (March 9 column and photo), was promptly adopted. We received many inquiring calls about her. It's heartwarming to know there are so many kindly people. "Customers will not be charged for operator-placed calls to emergency services such as fire and law en forcement agencies," Devor said, "and the handicapped will not be charged either.
