In an effort to uniformly identify subsurface utility services, the Illinois Commerce commission has established a new color code to be used statewide. The system should help minimize confusion by excavators in determining the identity of below-ground facilities. Paint marks and stake colors will conform to the following color standards: Gas, oil and petroleum lines - high visibility yellow; Electric - fire protection red; Com­ munication, telephone and telegraph - alert orange; Potable water - precaution blue; Sewer - safety green. This color code is identical to one recommended by the American Public Works association as a national system. Northern Illinois Gas, Commonwealth Edison, Natural Gas Pipeline Co,, American Telephone and Telegraph (Long Lines), North Shore Gas, and Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline, began marking their facilities with thp new color code April 1.
