The most ancient cuisine in the world is Mexican. It is based on corn, which was originally wild until tamed and cultivated by man, The second oldest cuisine is Chinese, with rice as its base. The most recent cuisine is French. The appearance of safety caps on medicines, drugs and other potentially hazardous substances has helped reduce the number of accidental poisonings. Even so. several thousand Illinois children, 12 and under, are victims of ac cidental poisoning each year. This is doubly tragic, as child poisoning is one of the most easily preventable tragedies in the whole consumer product safety area. ^Studies show that most victims of accidental poisoning are children who are too young to read or Understand poison dangers. Studies also indicate that accidental poisoning victims who are two years old or older, are generally poisoned by eating or drinking internal medication, especially aspirin and aspirin products. Children under two are more likely to eat or • drink household preparations such as bleach, furniture polish, cleaning products and the like. This is probably due to the fact that many children under two are "crawlers" who can easily get into under-the-sink cabinets and other low places where household products are often stored. In order to help prevent the accidental poisoning of our children, the Illinois Depart ment of Public Health is urging parents, grandparents and others who may have small children in their homes, to take a few simple precautions: 1. Remember that substances you might consider harmless can be deadly to curious youngsters who are inclined to put everything into their mouths. 2 . When you purchase any potentially hazardous sub stance. look for a container with a "child-proof" cap or lid. 3. Store medicines, drugs, household preparations, pett'bleum products, etc., in places thaf-are not easy for small children to reach. It's a good idea to keep these storage places locked, even if i* means installing a padlock on a cabinet door. • 4 When you are caring for small children, or when they are visiting in your home, keep a constant watch on them. It takes a child only a minute or two to swallow a poisonous substance. 5. If you leave your children with a baby-sitter, take a minute or two to show the sitter where you keep household products, medicines and other hazardous substances. Make certain the sitter understands the importance of keeping your children away from these materials. 6. Have a bottle of Syrup of Ipecac handy to induce vomiting if necessary. Another good idea is to find the number of your nearest poison control center, and keep it in an easv-to-reach place, such as on the cover of your telephone directory. You can find the number by dialing the operator Accidental poisoning can happen, even with the most vigilant of parents. If it hap pens in your hon\e, call the poison control centekfdr advice and assistance. Have the container the child ate or drank from with you when you make the call That way, you will be able to tell the poison center exactly what the child ingested...and that information Shutter HOT WINPOW & WALL DICOR 20%°" JOANNA SALE WOVEN WOODS SHUTTERS Woven Woods - the unique Shutters - stained, unfinished, in woven shades that add a bright colors with movable louvers or new look to any area of your various insets.
